Mni Cooper 2001-2006 DIY window not sealing well fix
Hi all Steem Friends!
Today we are going to do a bit DIY fix on the windows of Mini Cooper 2001-2006 (r50,r52,r53). If your window does not close up all the way up and makes a seal when you shut the door (when the window is rolled all the way up) it means that in the past the window regulator broke down and whoever installed it never did it properly. Not to worry you are in luck because it is an easy fix of very annoying fault where you have wind noise in the cabin all the time and occasional water leaks through.
The first thing to do is get these tools, you are going to need Torx bit T30, hex bit#4, a flathead screwdriver, a suction mount of any kind to grab the window and a vacuum when fine-tuning it.
(if you cannot get a suction cup and you have someone to help you can do it by pressing the window from both sides (inside and outside) and adjusting it into position that way).
Remove the red reflecting plastic from the end of the door because there is one screw hidden beneath. Just pop it out with a small flathead.
Remove the door handles surrounding plastic - it pops out easily with our trusted flathead
All that remains now is to remove 4 screws with our Torx T30
Stash them in a safe place (2 long & 2 short)
You are going to need to pull the door panel where it look the loosest usually it is on the bottom left part of the door and pull firmly until you hear a loud pop - continue to work your way around the door from there.
Notice the lock pin - you need to lift the panel over it to take it off keep this in mind when assembling back to fit the locking pin before you "click" door panel in place.
Now when the panel is down we have access to fiddle inside the door, you need to lower the window to about half and try to access these two plastic window mounts.
You are looking for the top white plastic geared like a coin.
Right side
Left side
Sometimes you can get them loose by hand - in other cases you are going to need Hex key #4 (you will need it to tighten the white circular plastic properly).
Unscrew the top white plastic (bottom one holds the window that it does not fall through) so you can lift the window with your hand without too much force. Repeat it on the other side.
Get in the car and close the door.
Now is the time to get that suction cup to work. Roll the window all the way up, sit in the car and close the door. Attach the suction cup to the window and lift it as far as you can so the window makes a proper seal. Help yourself with the other hand where you can lift the left side of the window.
The tricky part is to fixate the window in this position while the doors are closed because widows on Mini don't have a door frame and they are self-regulating that 1cm final tight fit lift. It is necessary to reach with your hand in the door and by hand tighten the white circular nut on the right side. After that lower the window a bit and secure the other side by hand.
Try the fit tighten them with the hex key #4( do not overtighten). after you tried to close the door and everything fits nicely. If not repeat the step with adjusting the window until you get it just right. I had 3 attempts before making it perfect.
Notice the difference in height by the dirt on the window.
To test the fit try to push the window out when in the car on the front as well as back side of the window.
When you are happy how the window closes it is time to return the door panel (pop in the door lock pin first) make sure that all is in right place and firmly press alongside the edges until you hear a loud pop from the door (not all clips have to pop but most of them will).
Screw in the missing 4 screws pop the plastic around the door handle and red plastic back and you are done.
It's time for a well deserved pint.
