Antique Victrola

in #diy7 years ago

Hello friends, many of you have asked me to show some of my work in progress. So today I will be showing what I have been working on for the past two weeks.

This is a Victrola and from what I have found stamped on various parts it was the 168th unit made in May 1933.

As you can see by the previous and the next few pictures it came to me in pretty bad shape.

The doors won't close

The mechanism that actually turns the record wasn't working. I took it apart found the problem and fixed it. Now it works and can play records once again.

This is actually the volume control. Push the rod in for full volume or pull it out to turn the volume down. This is simplicity at it's finest. Everything about this is just plain simplicity.
I so enjoy working on antiques because to me it's a window in time. I can virtually see into the inventor's mind just by studying his inventions.
Believe it or not but it takes straight forward genius to come up with such simple yet effective design.

The hole that the rod threads into was stripped. So by glueing a dowl in it I was able to drill it out and thread the metal rod back in so it now works like new.

Glueing the loose veneer back in place.
I do my best to keep the origanal veneer. I only use new veneer when the old is beyond repairing.

The lid was so warped (even more than myself) that I had no choice but to make a new one. I lucked out and was able to recover the veneer from the original lid (well the top veneer anyhow). So I glued the old veneer onto the new lid.

The new molding pieces for the new lid.

Now to show the finished pictures. It is completely reassembled and ready to ship.

Quality job. Looks stunning.

Thank you so much!

that is very nice table...

Excellent job Dawg. It looked in pretty bad shape, now it looks spanking new. Judy needs the felt to be replaced, that ugly green had got to go. Oops, forgot you like ugly green. 😬

Yes I love green but even if I didn't I could not change it because I try to stay as original as possible. Glad you like the rest of it.

Awesome! I am very impressed. You have me inspire to take a look at the old buffet in my garage :/

I have refinished some buffets myself. Those are fun to work on.

Holy crap, that's amazing! How did you make the wood shine so brightly? It looked like it was beyond saving - so dull and stained.

Years of experience and a lot of patience.

Holy damn. That is some nice work. You even polished up the little bowls you were using to hold the screws on top. (I have no idea of their actual purpose). Did you take it for a spin? Do you even HAVE any vinyl to put on there? :)

Those cups hold the spare needles (that I haven't polished yet). I polished all the rest of the metal. No unfortunately I do not own and vinyl records though I wished I did because I would love to hear them on this!!!

I'm in awe of your talent. I love when someone can see something that looks like you can't save it but you saw the potential and gave it a new life.

Thank you so much. Your comment really means a lot to me. I do what I lovelove aand love what I do.

Excellent job . Very Good post. keep it up
