The Miners of steemit & the ethical use of votes.
There has been considerable discussion about the ethical use of votes and the consensus seems to be that votes should be reserved for quality content.
While building the Jack the friendly bot to warn users about possible improper use of tags, i setup a monitor to see the body of posts and comments shorter than 10 characters to see if i could come up with ideas to discourage empty commenting and actually build #discusion on steemit.
To my surprise I saw a burst of dots ran across the screen:
It attired my attention the legend, "Not Social - Stay Away" and the name "MiningSteem" not following anyone and a little miner picture.
His profile looks Legit, he even posted a few days ago and had a healthy discussion with his commentators...
So went to look at where those dots were coming from...
As you can see, this post was made 4 months ago and didn't earn much. It's just a meme copied from somewhere so really doesn't deserve much either.
However, a few days ago, paco decided that the post deserved a lot more than what it got, so began spamming his old post with new replies and nested replies into replies, 88 times, each earning almost $2!
You can check out the actual comments page here or the article itself to see what I'm talking about.
How do you feel about this kind of behavior?
Should it be tolerated, is it his acceptable?
Most people sees the rewards pool as their own pockets, not realizing this is money comes from creating inflation to maintain the sustainability and growth of the platform.
If you self vote your good posts because no one else did it is kinda ok, at least you did an effort!
But commenting just to self vote and doing it 88 times you are just stealing from everyone and removing the opportunity to share the rewards pool with others.
A friend told me to give a try and contact this user and discuss with him the possibility of using his SP for growth of the platform and the general greater good which is what steemit is about.
I told him to try, i kinda agree but also think this needs to be publicly discussed

@nnnarvaez
Unfortunately this is becoming all too common. People work so hard at finding ways to game the system, when the effort would be better used to make real content.
There needs to be some sort of incentive to those who have big SP numbers to get out and reward good content. If someone sees that they can upvote themselves for 5 cents, but the next person with the same vote power is getting $5, they will go to see how that person got $5 and mimic it. Hopefully we can teach people that good content reaps good rewards, rather than posting crap content a lot reaps a lot of little rewards.
It can be really hard to find GOOD content some days, so I feel for the big fish who just want to stick to the people they know, but SOMEBODY needs to show the minnows that effort pays off. And it can't just be @curie.
Just my 2 cents worth!
I think we need to encourage less elitistic curation afterall the ones investing real money in the platform need to help create adoption and engagement.
The system is totally open and it is up to those who posses the SP to share the rewards pool in a fairer way to entice the users to remain.
I have helped about 30 people to join, and most have just abandoned after a few days of making the mistake of giving it all in first posts not having a follower base.
I powered up to encourage them, but now most dont post...
I just got 1 message from one of them very happy because her poetry thing made 15 cents... !
The only thing we can do is lead by example, i had big hopes when i joined, now i realized 4k SP are nothing and i vote a small population.
I beleived initially that with some SP and making tools other would like the effort and join to help but with some exceptions almost everyone here is too busy chasing a vote to care about others.
Then you have the smart guys who come up with this techniques thinking since everyone is doing it at some level it will go unnoticed (which for the most part is true)
It is not good content that reaps good rewards is good intentions and value what does.
Afterall what is good content ?
What might be perfect for you can seem boring to me... I do vote based on engagement created by the post, not based on the post itself and i do vote when i find the posts i dont look for curation rewards that is a big fish game my best week using all sort of techniques i got about 5 dollars curation and to get that i had to refrain from voting content that i would have liked voting.
So i told my self, screw this, i vote when i see them not when is rentable to do it.
This place has a lot of things to enhance, but it is up to us the users to shape the way we woould like to see it.
That is one of the criteria i use to choose my witness votes, see what are they doing to take this into the direction i would like to see this place steered, same reason i became a witness, in the hopes of one day have a say
"...when the effort would be better used to make real content."
Effort? No, there is little effort in what these people do. You run a bot and it does all of the work and they sit back and watch the money roll in. These sort of selfish schmucks don't care about the community and won't listen.
It is impossible to stop people from self-voting, the ideal would be for the system to work in such way that they would win more if they didnt...
The system is already made like that... (It is up to us to make it work)
Those who have more SP need to share the rewards pool, i've seen you do. I try too it with my limited means.
With PowerUP comes great responsability
That is the way for us who trust the long term future of the platform to encourage others to join and stay.
I dont mind self voting much, I mean if you write something that from your point of view is good and goes unnoticed or something, well... you are just using part of your SP to compensate for your "Proof of Work"
But to actually mine STEEM instead of ideas is something that can only be compared to misuse of the available funds...
I think about 80% of the users have only their little 0.500 SP + the 27 delegation, when they self vote they take a tenth of a cent...
And most times their stuff is at least fairly good (when is not plagiarism or spinning from somewhere), so we could say that self vote is deserved...
It is a way to motivate people to keep trying until they get noticed.
Why 80% of users have 27SP delegated and me only 12SP (13SP previously)? So far I thought that the delegation from @steem was only for those who had less than 15SP, so that the poor also had some influence by voting.
I have no idea... I used to have 27 even thou my SP was high, now that i delegated i think they are gone...
I see you make good content and you post both in french and English, tell you what; organize a small community, bring new users, keep engaging people that comments your posts.
Help us help steemit grow and I'll get you a 700 to 1000 SP delegation to kick start you.
Switzerland needs to have more steemians (that is where the money sleeps after all hahaha)
Thank you very much for the advice and your proposal for delegation.
Three of my colleagues opened an account but they posted little. They are more active on Facebook and Instagram. Two other people told me they were going to open an account, I'm still waiting to see them here. I did not use social networks before Steem. I read here quite a few articles about cryptocurrencies before discovering the nature of SteemIt. I had to try.
Yes in Switzerland money sleeps, but not in poor's bed ;) Most people from here to whom I speak of the Bitcoin do not believe me when I tell them that we will all pay with altcoins in 10 years.
I continue to talk about crypto to the people I like because I wish them to be still among the early adopters.
Make a twitter account, post your steemit articles there, pester your friends on wassap and telegram.
Get them engaged, use busy.org to post and use the busy tag they will give you an upvote for being beta tester / advertiser.
Create a discord channel, engage with other people from CH already on steemit, you will see is fun !
And in the end over the long term this will pay off!
I have nowhere as many followers as on Steem. Long live Steem!
I will test busy.org and make a Twitter account (at least to follow the crypto). You are a good adviser, thanks.
@michelcamacaro
very easy to talk about the need to make a small bit of money with self voting and small groups when around 80 out of the 490 votes to you were from @cervantes

I am very sorry for your confusion ... I think I have not said anything, who has made value judgments is the author of the post
He said:
@michelcamacaro
im not confused i see the multiples times you spammed this post with images on voting and images from the blockchain history.
you saying this is a joke when you get paid so much votes from @cervantes
No estoy confundido.
I regret their confusion again, it is not spam, it is a relevant subject to the conversation, the author speaks of self-vows and the graphics speak of someone who votes himself.
If you did not see the 3 accounts belong to the same author :) and all votes go towards the ... :)
@michelcamacaro
There is no confusion, you try to say his voting is bad,you are part of large group that votes each other why does an individual who does with small amount matter?
I count 8 accounts below exchanges votes often and with thousands worth of SP.

lol jajajajajajajja you are so funny :) see that.
#my outgoing votes ;) see the numbers lol
and the most important, I HAD NEVER SAID I AM A CURATOR, or have asked sp to anyone to support me in false projects;)
I'm just a writer and I just have to account for my votes to myself;)
The problem begins when someone cheats a community, whales and everyone pretending to help :)
Cervantes its a real curation group ;) lol
Ahh yes, i am very happy :) a real curation group vote for me.. and they vote for a lot of people... but @cervantes its a real proyect to help people... not a scam to have money and dont vote anybody.
@michelcamacaro
i didn't say it was
what i said was, its easy to comment with images how others make money when you get paid with less work.
You are right it is very hard to give yourself votes all day and say that you help a community.
when you give votes to each other with tens of thousands worth of SP is worse.
In the same way, I repeat, the value judgment did the author, I do not :)
@michelcamacaro
you do the same but in different way by scale of 100+
jajajajaj no nono you are very bad, he is the same person voting for him self... ;P hahahah realy you are funny or are the same author lol...
that is indefensible
@walo, @nnnarvaez, @bebeth and @reveur are acounts of the same person.. you know???
Well i am tired for today, to was a pleasure to talk about this, but tomorrow are the long day, you are invite to read about this in a post i am write now, i think tomorrow or the sunday i will up.
Sorry about my bad english :)
http://www.steemreports.com/outgoing-votes-info/?account=nnnarvaez
http://www.steemreports.com/outgoing-votes-info/?account=bebeth
people and money.... do I need to say any more.
Fantastic spot, thanks for the post

I don't think this should be permitted. I think this is ruining the value of votes. Even all the other bots voting on posts. Look I write good content, but it get buried so fast, it is hardly ever seen. If a whale votes on it, or if a a few people resteem it; it might get some attention. But. Was the content really judged on the quality of the post. No. It becomes a money contest. A popularity contest. A money and popularity contest and a bot voting contest. This ruins the value.
wow good job @nnnarvaez
looks like a bot comment farm they have setup,
you might have discovered a way to spot this kind of abuse and put an end before they clean the reward pool,
I now know supporting you as witness was a vote well placed,
keep up the good work 👍
I wrote a reply and it fail to post.
Basically i was thanknig you for your trusting me on my witnessing.
And explaining that i would prefer to create a Report of Pride recognizing users that encourage discussion and engagement than a post of shame for the little abuses.
Most people needs guidance in what the steemit spirit can be... a place to reproduce what is wrong with the world, or a place were we recognize what is good in us and encourage its spread and adoption.
Good eye, I occasionally see some weird activity but don't have as deep an understanding of the mechanisms at play. Want to get better at recognizing things like this.
