Jesus and the disciples: This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent. John 6:29

The Gospel of John relates that Jesus, while he was with his disciples in Galilee, multiplied the loaves and the fish to feed a multitude that followed him. At this sign performed by the "son of man" the crowd was amazed and men said to each other: "Surely, he is the Prophet we have been expecting!" John 6:14.
Although the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves had already been performed by the prophet Elisha during the reign of Jehoram, son of Ahab in Israel, this miracle allowed Jesus to show the true dimension of the Kingdom of God, the dominion or empire of divine perfections, to a mankind dominated by oppression and ignorance.
The day after the multiplication of the loaves, the crowd that followed Jesus found him in Capernaum, and it was there that Jesus gave the discourse about the Bread of Life. With this speech Jesus presented himself as someone more important than the prophet Elisha, and reminded his followers that just as the Hebrews had received manna from heaven to receive the promise of the land of Canaan, the Lord as "son of man" is that manna that must guide men toward a new promise, not earthly, but heavenly, the promise of the gift of eternal life. The Gospel of John presents Jesus in a very special way, Jesus is the personification of the perfections of God.
This is why Jesus addressed these wise words to his listeners at the beginning of his speech: "But don't be so concerned about perishable things like food. Spend your energy seeking the eternal life that the Son of Man can give you. For God the Father has given me the seal of his approval" John 6:27.
But then people asked him: "What must we do, to be doing the works of God?", and Jesus answered: "This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent" John 6:29. With this Jesus emphasized the importance of the gift of faith to follow him and understand his teachings, because Jesus is the only way to the contemplative life. Jesus is ultimately the one sent by the Father, that bread come down from heaven, to give the world a new life.
