Continuing with Netflix® material, This post will also feature a limited series titled Dirty John which is based on a true crime podcast by the same name. Dirty John stars Eric Bana, who some may remember as David Banner/Hulk from the first live action Hulk movie that was made, directed by Ang Lee.
Bana also costarred in Troy as Hector, opposite Brad Pitt.
In Dirty John, Bana plays the title role of "Dirty" John Meehan, a real life grifter and con artist that seduced and conned wealthy women from Ohio all the way to California.
The story is based on true events and takes place in Southern California where John meets a wealthy divorcee named Debra (Debbie) Newell through an online matchmaking site and very quickly begins to sink his claws into her life.
In the show, John presents himself as a doctor of anesthesiology and moves very quickly on Debra, who is a successful entrepreneur with a high- end interior design firm. She is also a single parent with 2 young adult daughters, one of them, Veronica (Ronnie) still living at home with her.
Ronnie is a very callous young woman. The show doesnt specify her age, but probably early twenties. She's very materialistic and trendy, and the woman keeps five thousand dollar designer purses locked in a closet safe. (Which turns out to be a huge asset later on)
She is immediately mistrustful of John from their very first encounter and cautions her mother not to continue seeing him.
From my initial impression of Debra(Debbie), she appears to be really naive and way too trusting of someone that she only just met. She keeps large amounts of imprecisely counted cash just stuffed in a gym bag in her home and when she openly tells John about this, you can almost see the light bulbs begin to flash in his brain.
Without giving away the show, John's behavior continues to arouse suspicion amongst Debbie's daughters. Also in addition to Ronnie, there is a younger daughter, Terra, who works at a pet day care and appears to be the more quiet and reserved of the two sisters. In dealing with her suspicions of John, Ronnie prefers direct confrontation with him. Terra, on the other hand, takes it upon herself to snoop on John behind his back. After John and Debra quickly move in together, Terra takes it upon herself to start rummaging through John's private effects. Her lack of discretion is the catalyst that gets her caught red-handed by John himself, which then crams Debra into an awkward situation.
A mother shoulda never have to deal with a situation where she is forced to choose sides between her own child and a man that she has only been seeing for just a few months. And yet, that is exactly what she allowed herself to be drug into, and ends up making the horribly wrong choice.
Terra is heartbroken that her mother refuses to see in John what she and her sister Ronnie both blatantly see. With Debra not heeding the cautionary advice from either daughter, Ronnie decides that it's time to bring in the big guns.
She takes a more conventional approach by hiring a private investigator, someone who has more of the skill sets and resources needed to dig up more dirt on John Meehan and locate the concrete information needed to hopefully convince her mother once and for all that John is the wrong choice. Ronnie also enlist the help of her male first cousin, Toby.
With Toby and the P.I.'s help, Ronnie and Terra begin connecting the dots that piece together Dirty John's background, finding loose thread after loose thread to tug on. As John becomes more and more exposed for who and what he truly is, he senses the net closing in and he begins to escalate his own modus operandi. By this time, other concerned friends and family of the Newells have taken notice and decided to get involved, lending support and assistance where needed.
I don't want to give any more away but I wanted to give readers enough juicy details that they would be enticed to give the show a watch. All credit goes to Christopher Goddard did a fantastic job of writing and producing the podcast, based on interviews he conducted with Debra Newell. Bravo® Network originally produced and aired the series, which is available on Netflix® for streaming!!
