I have a friend who contracted Type 1 diabetes as an adult after a nasty infection screwed up his immune system and pancreas. I have cut my sugar consumption in an effort to avoid the Type 2 that runs in my family.

Type 1 is not considered to be passed by genetics, but type two can definitely have a higher risk if it runs in the family. Race and gender have an impact on a persons chances also.
You make a good choice to reduce your sugar intake: but isn't this the case with all diabetes prevention and management: its a good idea weather you have diabetes, or a risk of diabetes, or neither - they're simply healthy decisions that everyone can benefit from.
