القمر أكثر الأجسام لمعانًا في السماء ليلاً، ولكنه لايصدر ضوءًا من ذاته، خلافًا لنجم الشمس مثلا، الذي يصدر ضوءًا من ذاته. وعندما يتألق القمر فإنه يعكس ضوء الشمس. وفي بعض الليالي يبدو القمر وكأنه كرة مضيئة لامعة. وفي ليال أخرى يظهر على شكل شريحة رفيعة من الضوء. ولكن القمر لايغير حجمه، وشكله، وإنما يتغير منظر القمر حينما تضيء الشمس أجزاء مختلفة منه.

يدور القمر حول الأرض مرة واحدة كل 27 يومًا وثلث اليوم تقريبًا، كذلك يـدور حول نفسـه مـرة واحـدة كل 27 يومًا وثلث اليوم. ولذلك فإن وجهًا واحدًا من القمر يبقى متجهًا نحو الأرض. ويبلغ متوسط المسافة بين مركزي الأرض والقمر نحو 384,403كم. وتستغرق الرحلة بالصاروخ من الأرض إلى القمر ثم العودة نحو ستة أيام. ولأن القمر قريب نسبيًا من الأرض، فإنه يبدو وكأنه أكبر كثيرًا من النجوم، وبنفس حجم الشمس تقريبًا.
