Detroit Will Breathe takes to the streets for the 100th night

Detroit Will Breathe marched the streets of Detroit for the 100th night in a row. The crowd was larger on this holiday weekend than it was earlier in the week. Demonstrators began at 6pm at the Detroit Public Safety Headquarters with speeches from organizers and community members. The group then took to the streets with their signs, banners and flyers. Although their chants were loud, it was peaceful and non-violent. Most of the spectators seemed in support of the march and some even joined in the chants and those in cars honked their horns.

There was only one moment of minor disobedience, when demonstrators hammered down signs of tombstones into a lawn with messages of unjust police treatment and security attempted to intervene. The demonstrators massively outnumbered the security, and they retreated without further incident. The group concluded the official march at around 10pm at the police headquarters.

Although tonight marked the 100th day of taking to the streets, it is not clear on how long the group intends to keep marching. Detroit Will Breathe scored a win last night when a U.S. District Court Judge ruled against the Detroit Police and put a 14-day restraining order on the use of force, which includes batons, tear gas, and rubber bullets. Police were clearly absent from tonight’s march. At one point, police were seen moving away from demonstrators as they marched down a street.

The upcoming schedule for Detroit Will Breathe has not been posted as of yet, but is expected to continue with a stronger participation during the holiday weekend.
