Renovation of a duplex apartment in Tribeca, New YorksteemCreated with Sketch.

in #design7 years ago

The New York studio Space4Architecture is at the origin of this duplex of 345 m2 (just that) located in the district of Tribeca. This huge area is spread over the last two levels of a Canal Street building, with views of the Hudson River and the skyline of downtown Manhattan.

Space4Architecture has renovated the apartment for a family of four, including two young children, who need a lot of storage space to keep the apartment uncluttered. The challenge was to maintain the original opening of the duplex space while ensuring adequate privacy. On the lower floor, the built-in wardrobes form a column that extends from the north to the south of the apartment. Three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a dressing room are organized on both sides of this central axis, all around a reception room. The emphasis is on the staircase connecting the two levels of the apartment. He rides a double height space surmounted by a skylight. Upstairs, rows of shorter cabinets are perpendicular to those below. In the middle is a large open area including the kitchen, dining rooms and living areas, which open onto a covered terrace. The private relaxation areas and the main circulation core of the building are hidden.

To keep the apartment in focus and create continuity between each of the rooms, a very limited range of materials was chosen. The use of only three materials, white plaster walls, oak for floors and joinery, and smooth concrete floor, helps to create a very bright space.
