The main passive design principle is the orientation of the building site that is positioned for buildings according to the path of the sun, planting trees or making wide eaves.

Another important element is the use of materials that can isolate heat on walls and roofs to keep the interior temperature of the building consistent and comfortable.

Passive cooling tries to integrate physics principles into the exterior scope of buildings for the purpose of Slow heat transfer into the building. This involves an understanding of the mechanisms of heat transfer: heat conduction, convection heat transfer, and thermal radiation (especially from the sun).
