[This Week in Design] - Figma Platform and Automation

in #design7 years ago

Last few weeks the best articles and news I've read were related to automation. From Figma Platform to Why we should look forward to automating design and AI.

We are all often scared of future and how it might affect us, our jobs, etc. However, I think the future is very bright for designers, and here are some articles from people who share my view.

Here's how I think AI and Automation can help us

  • AI will help us quickly pick things like mood boards based on our input
  • There will be less focus on the manual "craft"work and more on the thinking, strategy and understanding the business/client. I'd argue that's the most important thing.
  • It will speed up your process so you can focus more on deep work and reducing the mundane work

Basically, AI will work with us and for us. The designer of future is a symbiosis of AI and Human with Empathy and broader knowledge.

Now here are some articles on mostly similar topic.

Why You should not worry about Design Systems and Templates

Here, Dan Saffer from Twitter talks about our tendency to worry and shows some history as well (eg. wordpress plugins, Google Material Design, etc.).
Also, he talks about AI and future of design.

Spoiler alert, we as designers are still here.

Figma Platform - first-ever open Web API for a Design software

Figma has released their Web API. This is huge as this is a first step towards the automation as discussed above. This is the tool we've been missing to automate things and bring forward more collaboration between developers and designers.
What you can do even now is great. For example, you can take your design and convert it straight to React JS code and when you modify your design, the code will modify, too. The responsiveness is included of course as it's Figma.
And there's more with even bigger future plans.

Design Genome

Have you ever wondered how other design-focused companies deal with things like Organizational structure, design process, tool stack, etc. This is a great resource to learn just that - from companies like Slack, Netflix, Shopify, Google, etc.
They all do it differently so go and explore the Buffet of design in Organizations.

5 ways Data sets the best Design teams apart

Data help a lot in design process as well as in creating culture, better portfolio, personas, and also helps with setting priorities.
This is a great summary on why you should focus on data.

Usability Testing for Conversion: Stop Following Trends, Start Using Data

Another data-focused post. This time from Toptal. Okay, there's nothing ground-breaking here but it's a good overview of the basics and a nice reminder.

Ten Things You Should Do Now To Get More Clients

Okay, this one is slightly different. Though if you worry about losing clients to computers and AI reading this might give you a bit of a boost on getting more of them. It's worth reading purely just for the last 3 points where there are great books, podcasts and videos recommendations.

If you see some good articles worth reading let me know and they might make it in next week. If they are from Steemit, even better :).
