Dtube Dance // My Best Tip for Looking More Musical When You Dance

in #dance6 years ago (edited)

Hello Friends!

It has been a little bit since I last posted a video in my Dtube Dance series! Part of the reason is that I don’t have a dance partner right now, and so I haven’t really had anyone to film with. I’m working on that though and I’ll hopefully have some awesome dance videos coming up for you guys soon!

I thought it would be fun to do something a little different today though. I usually post a video of me dancing to a song, but I thought I’d actually give YOU guys some dance tips!

At some point, everyone finds themselves at parties, weddings, concerts or other places where people are dancing. Wouldn’t it be more fun to feel a little more confident going out on the dance floor?

Here is my simplest, easiest tip to automatically improve your swagger.

Accentuate the upbeats

What do I mean by that? Honestly, it will make way more sense if you watch the video, but I am basically referring to the even counted beats. Most music is broken into 8 count measures and so instead of moving at random – you can focus your movement to hit the upbeat (or even counted beats) to instantly look like you have more style!

In songs that have a bit more of a high energy, pop feel – you will likely want to accentuate with a sudden stop, or hit. You can use various body parts to do this!

You can actually use this tip in slower, juicier songs too. Just because the count is an even 8 beats – that doesn’t mean you can’t manipulate them a bit. You can actually streeeetch out the upbeat and shorten the downbeat to have a smoother flow to your dancing. Again… this is where watching me demonstrate in the video will make more sense!

My Dance Background

I started dancing ballet when I was about 4 years old and it was definitely my passion growing up! I didn’t do much dancing in high school, except for musical theatre – but I picked it back up again around 9 years ago. I started doing ballroom and latin dancing and then eventually found West Coast Swing. It is a partner dance that really allows space for creativity and partner connection. You never know what is going to happen when you walk on the dance floor and I love getting to create in the moment with another person.

Dancing is mostly just a fun hobby for me. I do occasionally teach, compete and perform … but I mainly just like to go out and have fun, while getting to be creative at the same time.

Well, I had a SUPER fun time filming this video and I have lots more tips I could share if you guys are interested in learning! Let me know what you think and I hope you guys have a fantastic day!

Always happy to meet a fellow dancer here. Peace!

Yay!! There aren’t very many of us here! 😉 So cool that you break dance. I’ve always done smoother movements like ballet and swing... but I’d eventually like to start learning more hip hop. Pretty sure I’d break something if I actually tried to break dance though. lol

Your posts are always so fun and entertaining! Love it! I love the variety of posts you're sharing.

I've been trying to really challenge myself to share more of myself and put it out there. I was concerned my posts would be too eclectic. I've been advised to try to specialize in one area to grow my followers, but I can't help it. I just have too many interests for that!

By the way, you mentioned theatre? What was your favorite role or production? Mine was 20 years ago, Eliza DooLittle in My Fair Lady. Still makes me smile. :-)

Sorry that I’m just responding now! So cool to hear that you did theatre as well... and that you played Eliza Doolittle. Amazing! I actually never landed a real part, but I had a few solos here and there. 😉 I went to a private high school with a big arts program, and so there was a lot of talent filling those roles. Pretty awesome though because some of those people have gone on to become professional singers.

As for sticking with a niche topic... I would actually offer a counter perspective. I think that is an important strategy in OTHER social media platforms, but not as much on Steem. The big difference here is that most people will follow you for YOU, not because you post on a certain topic. This is not true for everyone, but it has been true for me.

For a while I was posting mainly music, but it wasn’t until I really started broadening my post topics that I saw big growth. It gives you exposure into other areas of Steemit and gives you the opportunity to connect with lots of different people!

This is just my two cents. I hope you found it helpful! If you have any other questions, I’m always happy to help! Feel free to respond here or hit me up on Steemit chat or discord.

Love the dance @coruscate. I hope we have an opportunity to do it in Vegas! Great video -- I love what you share!

Aww thanks @everlove!! I’m sure that we will have an opportunity to dance! Even if it’s just a happy dance because we are all meeting in person!! Hehe

I'm always down for a happy dance--any time, any where!! Bring some of your creative spirit--and perhaps a thing or two---like your flute???? - to share in the art space. It'll be a great spot for connection and to create together.

As a DJ, I always get behind anyone that promotes dance. I also appreciate the way interpret the music through dance including emphasizing the beats with movement. Thanks for this.

Your comment put a huge smile on my face! I can also appreciate someone who is good at breaking down the beats in music! I definitely think that music and dance go hand-in-hand. I have definitely found that being a musician makes me a better dancer and vice a versa. :-)

Great advice! I've never thought of it that way before. I'll test it out next time @steemcafe and I are dancing to Montell Jordan LOL!

Awesome!! Haha maybe we’ll have some dancing in Vegas?

🎶 This is how we do it🎶

My wife enjoys dancing as a means of exercise for slimming. She does dance with rhythm. If I dance, I may just look very much like Garfield or Mr Bean. Lack of rhythm. Nevertheless, tips for dancing better may help a bit for people like us. At least maybe look lesser like a clown. lol

Hahah I loved your comment! The visual of Garfield and Mr. Bean was pretty funny! Glad the tip helped you! 😉

Sry lea but from my life experience you either have the rythm or you dont. Some People just van feel the beat. (Especially Dover German man :D )

Hahah that’s a fair point. With enough practice though, I think most people can at least improve if they want to!

such a shame you dont have a partner. you got the rythm. if we catch up at steemfest 3 lets do a session! :D

YES!! I would love that!

Wow that was lovely I wish I could dance but it's not too late though keep up the good work

It’s never too late! I’m glad you found the video helpful.
