It is great to see my Dadi node back online!steemCreated with Sketch.

5 months ago I started running my Dadi founding node. Just about 1 month back, my node was intermittently disconnected and eventually went on to be fully down. I wrote in to Dadi and they kindly promised to send a replacement SD card for free. After a month of waiting, it is finally here! Now my node is back online!

What is Dadi?

Dadi is a project working on decentralized cloud services. Imagine AWS or Azure built in a decentralized manner. Instead of hosting cloud services on a few centralized data centers, Dadi aims to spread the network nodes across the globe in a decentralized manner. The image below is from Dadi's website and it illustrates the difference between a centralized cloud service platform versus what Dadi plans to offer.

Currently, Dadi's CDN (Content Delivery Network) service is already live. In the past, all data for a website is stored in one big server or a cluster of servers. Depending on the geographical location of the server and the website visitor, the site loading speed might differ. A Singapore visitor visiting a site hosted on a server in the US might face much more latency than a site that is hosted in Malaysia. A content delivery network aims to reduce such problem by distributing data heavy content to sites that are nearer to the user. Typically, images and videos are stored at CDN providers. The CDN providers usually have data centers all over the globe to store their clients' images and videos. When a visitor from Asia visit their clients' site, they will direct the visitor to a server in Asia. This way, the website will load faster regardless where the visitor is located.

Dadi takes a step further by making every Dadi node serve content. As long as the Dadi network keeps growing, content delivery should get smoother and faster over time. Currently, there are already over 300 nodes running all over the world as seen on Dadi's explorer site. Right now it is still quite concentrated in Europe and lacking in Asia, hopefully things will get better as they onboard more nodes.

Dadi is an ambitious project, and in my opinion, probably overly ambitious. There are many other services are in the pipeline and scheduled for delivery in 2019. However, I think they should really take things slow and not overpromise. It will be great to see more services delivered, but I think they need to do it in a sustainable manner and ensure that there are market demand before rushing into work.
