My Most Unlucky Day On A Bike!
I've been slacking lately, and with a serious lack of miles in the legs and some big events coming up, I decided that today was the day for me to right my wrongs and get back on track. The weather looked good, no rain and only 7 mph winds. I had no excuse not to head out on a ride and to tell the truth the idea was quite appealing. I've missed cycling, and the only reason I haven't been out more is because the weather has just been too miserable for it to be enjoyable. I got my pump, spare tubes and other things together, inflated up my tyres and headed out.
I was spinning along quite merrily, looking forward to getting out of the city and to the nice country lanes where the more enjoyable cycling could begin. As I approached a small hill I got out of the saddle to put a bit of extra power down. After a couple of pedal strokes I heard a loud CRUUNCH and the crank arms could no longer turn. I immediately realised something was seriously wrong, so I unclipped and pulled onto the pavement so I could take a look. I glanced down and realised that my front derailleur had slipped down from the point where it attaches to the frame, then fallen down and become mangled by the chain.
It was badly bent and I quickly realised there was no way I was going to fix it and continue my ride. I was a couple of miles from home and didn't particularly fancy a walk back pushing my bike in the cold wearing all my cycling gear. Fortunately I was able to get someone to pick me up and take me home (thanks Dad!).
I was still determined to ride that day, and besides I needed to. I have really felt quite a lot less fit over the last couple of weeks. I decided that I would just go on my indoor trainer and do a race on Zwift. I set it all up just in time to start the race, put on some Pendulum for added motivation and things got cracking. After a couple of laps the pack of riders in my category had thinned out, eventually to the point where it was just me and another rider. I planned to attack on the last climb, and had an aero boost power up that I know would help me a lot during the descent and in the race for the finish line.
As soon as we hit the climb I upped my power to the maximum I knew I could sustain. The other rider stayed with me at first, but started to drop off. It looked like I was going to win and there were just 2 miles left in the race. Then all of a sudden all other riders disappeared. I was disconnected... damn internet! An hour of racing wasted just because my internet went down. I kept riding hard until the finish line just incase I reconnected and the other riders reappeared but no such luck. I crossed the line on my own, I was hoping that maybe at least my ride would be uploaded and I could see the race results online. No such luck. I clicked the save and exit button but the the spinning loading wheel kept spinning forever, before eventually the software crashed. All in all, a very unlucky day!
Hell yeah! A fellow biker with similar interests. Just stumbling across your blog today, now following you @captaincanary. Great content! Good luck on the derailleur repairs.
Thanks @maven360 ! Just ordered the replacement part and I'm hoping to have the bike up and running again by the end of next week
ugh.. that is a bad day! Did you manage to get the Bianchi into a shop to see if the front derailleur was still usable or do you need to buy another?
Whats your user name on Zwift? I'll look you up! Im just under my name and club: Brandon Babcock RCC
I had to order another unfortunately, and since it's a Campag groupset the part is a little harder to get hold of. Might just sell it and get something with 105.
I just added you on Zwift!
Ah that is a shame, sorry to hear! I've never used Campy, I've heard its a great product but the issues seem to come down to availability. I'm using Sram Red myself, but I've rented some road bikes with Dura-Ace and Ultegra and I really enjoy that set up as well and you'll always be able to get and Shimano line up fairly easily.
Thanks for the add, I'll see you in the Zwift world!
Hahaha. Shit like this frequently happens to my riding buddies when we are out riding together. It's as if i am bad luck for them!
One time the threads on the pedal got destroyed and the clipped in pedal was stuck to my friends shoe rather than the crank!
On another occasion the rear hub conked from within and no matter how hard you pedalled, you would be standing still!
Once the tubeless prssta valve broke off leaving us with an unrepairable flat.
I can go on and on with the mechanical failures of my many friends. But the most important thing is to get back on the bike and ride...
Shit yeh these things happen! A couple of those sound quite funny, although for your friends maybe not so much haha. I've been quite lucky so far with things like that. The worst before this is just probably getting a puncture in 4 different countries over a 6 day long cycling trip, though it was my fault for using racing tyres on a cycle tour!
Racing tyres on a tour. Sounds like a recipe for adventure! Have you blogged about it anywhere?
No I didn't blog about it actually. We were riding quite hard so I didn't really get much opportunity to stop for photos, plus I needed to make my battery last. Next time I go I will try to get some blogs written though!
Sorry to hear about your bike! I used to service bikes and there was always a look of distraught when good weather hit and this stuff happened!
I actually didn’t know you could race people online with home bike setups, that’s the coolest thing I’ve heard in a while! At least you can use that while it’s snowing outside!
Yeh it's really quite fun actually, like playing a game and getting fit at the same time! Do you cycle?
I used to when I had the space to store my bikes. Had a couple of canondales, one road and one mountain. Loved getting out on them!
oh man. I like you can pretty much play a game with that zwift setup. You even made it sound exciting lol. Sometimes we just have one of those days where everything goes wrong. In the end its all about taking it with a laugh and a smile :)
Yeh exactly I didn't let it bother me! And yeh it actually was exciting, so much so that I've signed up for another race today
It was a bad day ...no worry everyday is not a bad day..People who believe they have bad luck create bad luck. Those who believe they are very fortunate, live in exactly that kind of world.
Better days ahead my friend, better days ahead!
Looks like nothing went your way today.
Well atleast you got a workout.
I really miss cycling, it's been so long
Sometimes you need those bad days, because it helps you...try to find the positives.
It doesn't bother me really, these things happen
Upvoted! I saw that we had a lot in common. Started following Bro!
