This Week in WiFi - June 27th, 2018
This week in WiFi we have two main topics of discussion as well as a useful infographic on keeping your wireless network secure.
WPA3 Certificate Announced by WiFi Alliance
First, we have the WiFi Alliance's June 25th introduction of the WPA3 certificate. Not only has it been close to 15 years since the introduction of WPA2, the predeceesor to WPA3, but several aspects of WPA2 have been proven insecure as seen by the KRACK Attack that was published back in October of 2017. You can find my full article on WPA3 here. If you want the Cliff Note's version, this quote from the WiFi Alliance sums it up nicely.
WPA3™ adds new features to simplify Wi-Fi security, enable more robust authentication, and deliver increased cryptographic strength for highly sensitive data markets. As the Wi-Fi industry transitions to WPA3 security, WPA2 devices will continue to interoperate and provide recognized security.
Here are a couple additional articles that provide more detail on WPA3:
- Wi-Fi WPA3 certificate with boosted security for home, enterprise announced - Business Standard
- WPA3 Brings New Authentication and Encryption to WiFi - Dark Reading
IEEE to Ratify 802.11ax
The second main topic in the WiFi world this week is the pending ratification of the first draft of IEEE 802.11ax. 802.11ax is the next generation of WiFi and will feature enhanced data rates as well as improved efficiency on high density WiFi networks. According to an article on ReTHINK Technology Research's website titled Third time lucky for 802.11ax draft, expected to be approved on July 1, the IEEE is expected to voto to approve the draft standard on July 1st. You can find my full article on 802.11ax here.
On the heels of this announcement, at Mobile World Congress, Qualcomm and New HC3 announced the availability of a new 802.11ax Enterprise Access Point, the HC3 WA6628 which is based on Qualcomm's IPQ8078 802.11ax chipset.
