Cyberpunk: The Anarchy of the Future

Sci-Fi has always been one of the top literary genres with known names like Isaac Asimov, Philip K. Dick, Arthur C. Clarke, Ray Bradbury, Aldous Huxley and a long, long etcetera. When this literary activity met, back in the70s-80s, those ragged guys from England (Sex Pistols) singing "...there is No Future for you..." calling for civil disobedience something woke up in the minds of people.

This movement evolved and brought light to new music subgenres like Anarcho-punk, Hardcore punk, Riot grrrl and more and then came Philip K. Dick with Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? hand in hand with Ridley Scott and Tron by Steven Lisberger offering people a new "god" technology, something tangible to believe, something that new generations would understand. So this new era brought an enormous load of new concepts mixed calling to question the old anachronistic beliefs at the rhythm of synthesizers with no need of heat but the computers one.

Cyberpunk was growing in the nineties with movies like Ghost in the Shell based on Masamune Shirow´s manga, Johnny Mnemonic, Matrix, I, Robot, Robocop, Terminator,... having all common denominators, dark ambience, technology mayhem, the light comes from energy, rain, a foolish government believing in control and the antiheroes, lonely people with a high tech understanding, usually anarchic minded and engaged in a moral debate to maintain the control over a technology constantly evolving tending to control itself, because, in contrast to mankind they need no gods or masters.

The end of the road is dark but not for the technology itself but for those who want to control it to the detriment of their own interest. Yea, you´ve guessed, Corporations, those controlling the information, your information, your life. So that´s the point of being anarchic and may even want to wear dark clothes in mourning for the world is coming for all of us but those in the top floor of a shinny skyscraper controlling Max Headroom and telling you what to do, what to think, what to eat...

Maybe in the future the control will be more subtle and you may not be able to discern if you are in control of your life. Just having an small implant connected to any net without the understanding of that tech will deprive of your freedom so imagine what can be able to do your home assistant robot, furthermore, if that robot is aware of his own existence, aware of being controlled too.

The inherent dichotomy in the search of technology it´s what define the Cyberpunk, are you going to control your life in a upcoming cybernetics based world or you will stand there being a puppet?
