Extra-Curation #1: Economics on YouTube - Plastic Straws, Ocean pollution, Minimum Wage, Virtual Economics and Tax Evasion
Welcome to Extra-Curation. Let's get straight to business. The topic is Economics and to narrow down the potential number f content to go through, I'll just stick with YouTube.
Plastic Straws
I'll star with something new and fresh. We all use straws and they are not that great for the environments just as cars and fossils fuels aren't good for the environment. But then again, horse carriages and hunting whales for oil is much much worse. Also this is a great example of MSM spreading bogus statistics not because of malice but because they are plain incompetent idiots who take their information from a kid with an alleged survey who haven't even completed primary education.
As a lover of environment and the sea I'd like to go a little off topic and draw your attention to the real levels of Ocean Pollution. The Infograph is taken from Custom Made
As you can see, the most of the attention has been on plastic bags and not straws. Plastic bags are a rel threat to the creatures that inhibit the ocean. The damage that straws can cause is very much limited in comparison. It is also more sustainable to popularize re-usable bags for shopping and I've seen some successful campaigns that has benefited consumers, businesses and the environment. Straws are not re-usable. But re-usable bags have been used by me and my family and we have saved both money and hassle avoiding plastic bags I'm very positive that the plastic usage of my household dropped significantly because of this.
Do what's good and effective instead of what feels good.
Interviews On Minimum Wage
This video can even be presented as an argument against democracy. It's not that people are completely oblivious to the realities of the world. there simply just don't take a stance. They just go along with the collective flow or just pick something based on feelings. Democracy is a cancer that says my wisdom is as good as someone else's ignorance. Worst of it all is that a person who is simply ignorant can be educated and salvaged. But people who understand that these minimum wage regulations can be harmful and still vote for more of it are beyond redemption. You can't wake up those who are pretending to be asleep.
Virtual Economy Case Studies
__There is a bunch of well known history involved too. those who are not gamers will find it interesting to see how money/assets supplies work in simulated environments that are still driven by "Human Action" of millions of individuals instead of pre-determined algorithms. MMOs can be a great place to research or some economics insights.
A Non-Libertarian Talking About Tax Evasion
Cut him some slack. He is just a guy with a gaming channel. He doesn't know much about economics but his gaming videos are really good. It's a great case study on a person who doesn't have any prominent economic/political views on the subject trying to dig information and present it. I think this could be the average economic understanding of a minimally biased fairly intelligent person. Unlike the ones in the interview above, this seems like a person who could actually use an education.
Happy Steeming!
PS: This is my very first Extra-Curation Post. I ended up curating 5 gems of education and information. i think this is a very good amount and I'm thinking of replicating this in the future. If you enjoyed the content, consider a resteem. Feedback is also appreciated :-)
I actually really enjoyed this post! Watched all of the videos.
The only thing I could add, is that the straw/bag problem could be solved by using hemp. Overall it can even replace most of fossil fuels, here's a great video on that:
Although the industry has been largely due to oil companies lobbying the governments.
I remember reading about Ford and Biofuel about 10 years ago while I was reading some articles on alternatives to fossil fuel. The Oil industry also repeatedly screwed up the electric cars until Elon Musk made it too big and too cool to crush.
I also found this cool link: http://biofuel.org.uk/biofuel-facts.html
Thanks for stopping by.
