Curation Rewards - Forget about it Minnows!
I see numerous blogs discussing Curation rewards, which are explained in the Steemit FAQ pages as follows:
Well that sounds pretty sweet, how much do i win?
Err, run that by me again in English please?
So you vote on a blog (or a comment), at 15 minutes, you get 50% of 25% split between 200 other voters divided by your birthday. The simple answer is, you don't get a lot at all.
Lets see how you are likely to be doing with various amounts of Steem Power.

The big cheese - @trafalgar
Weighing in at over 500,000 banked Steem Power, a Curation total of over 1800 SP for the past week, Wow! And wtf is your point @abh12345? Sorry, bare with me... Next up...
The (potentially smelly) cheese - @gigafart
Carrying close to 95,000 Steem Power and busting a move through 215 SP for the past week, a nice little earner for him. Again Asher, that's some cracking Steem Power earnings there, i'm struggling to see where you are going here... hang on, i'm getting there...
The slightly cured Cheese - @mindhunter
With over 11500 Steem Power in the coffers, a tidy sum for any a dolphin or minnow, our man in the north of the UK gathered approximately 16 SP for his weeks curation. Hmmm, 16 as a % of 11500, is 0.0014%.... Anyway, still better than a kick in the nuts right?! Yeah i suppose so, but what about one more example...
The cheesed off - @abh12345
This minnow is feeling pretty proud of his 966 Steem Power, and it's earned him about 2.7 SP for the past week. 2.7 Steem Power, cool... well... not really!
One more example? Go on then!
The babybell - @dozjia
A true Minnow with barely 20 Steem Power, forced to use 100% power without the 'slider' on the main steemit.com site, this fish has managed a grand total of .017 SP for the week.
This is where you are as a new starter, and this is why aiming for curation rewards is a fruitless task in the beginning.
You can try for the up-vote at 30 minutes, and the blog may go from $50 to $1000 in earnings, but you will only get .002 reward, if you are lucky. Don't waste your time, for now.
The alternative?
- Have something intelligent/funny to say about the post?
- Is it early into the lifetime of the post? (to catch the author waiting for replies)
- Vote! And make a winning comment.
A possible outcome to this?
An up-vote to your reply worth 1/2/3/10 weeks of well timed content curation as a Minnow with less than 100 Steem Power.
Thanks for reading, spread the message if you find this blog useful.
Asher
Wow, much less than I would've thought. Okay time to re-adjust the strategy a little...thanks a ton for doing the research here👊
No problem! Thanks for the comments :)
I think curation for upvoting others gives you very little... Should be fixed...
Its 'free' work, you just have to click or sign up to a trail right? Doesn't pay anything like a good up-vote for a comment for 95% of the users on the platform imo.
Yep, the 0.001 minimum SP cliff is high. I tried to tell the developers this.
That they should adjust the minimum lower, or kick all minnows up to 0.001 (if they are above 0.0001), or they should just remove the "curation" part of the intro to why to use steemit.
After I got to 100 SP, curation was a lot easier.
I just had to get a little lucky.
Yeah I think it's worthy of a mention in the FAQ, but an example or two should be given - if anyone can actually calculate the math behind it all! Thanks for commenting :)
Upvoted and RS :) Thanks for the mention!
Thanks a lot dude! A pleasure, you had about the right SP and well, i knew you'd be alright about it :D
I'm always alright about everything - apart from begging minnows ;)
Good post, it is very useful.
Thank you!
Curation rewards are pretty minimalistic unless you're super active and have a lot of influence. I only "curate manually," and even getting 40-50 posts a day... 10KV is "a really big day."
So I just curate because I enjoy reading interesting content anf giving a tip of the hat to its creators.
Yes, it's much more rewarding curating manually and without worry of how much SP you could gain timing the vote correctly.
Thank you for the hat tip, appreciated :)
Thank you, this is very helpful for me to understand the inner working of Steemit.
I'm glad you found it useful, thank you for commenting :)
I go through all the new, hot and trending posts, and find stuff that interests me, and then comment and upvote if I like the content.
I found out at only 674 SP, curation doesn't earn a lot. Making a meaningful comment ( and not fucking begging for a follow) is going to get you noticed. Maybe someone decides to follow you, because they think you are interesting/intelligent, and then you post a decent blog with some good content. That new follow might re-steam if it's good, and then their followers notice you.
That's one example of good organic growth on this platform. There is a list as long as my arm of people who have been very successful doing just that on Steemit, and I think it's the correct path to follow.
Curation is important, but I wouldn't expect to increase my reputation or Steem Power based solely upon it. Posting meaningful article about things you know and care about is what's going to get you ahead here.
I couldn't agree with your more! Thanks for commenting :)
A good explanation of curation rewards.
Thanks Jeff! I'm glad you found it useful :)
Wow this is great..
Thanks!
