#Metoo Cigarettes. Perceptions of domestic violence in advertising.

Some old advertising do not really stand the passage of time. When you are look at an old advert and you are saying things like "hmmm" "eh?" and "what", it probably is not a good sign.

With this advert for Tareyton cigarettes we learn that women are being abused by partners or men in general over switching cigarette brands. Maybe it was woman fighting, not sure.

I am keen believer in not just trying to be shocked over different views and attitudes over time that require a cultural context to properly understand them. It is a window into the time, a window where you can learn something. Nothing good in this case.

With the culture shift of #metoo campaign I bring in my own cultural contextual views on an old piece of advertising. Can you imagine this advert getting approved today in any way shape or form. Not only for the cigarette advertising but for the knuckle sandwich aftermath on a woman.

This advert looks to be perhaps late 1960s, early 1970s? I guess perhaps at the time they thought that they were striking a blow for black woman rights. Today we think, blow as in a punch and black as in an eye.

Nice find @jimdraw! What were those people thinking in that marketing meeting... hard to believe that this was totally acceptable some 50-60 years ago. I wonder what is it, that we accept today as normal, that will become completely unacceptable in another 50 years from now... any ideas?

I think that I forgot to mention that advertising was dominated by men back then and this shows the results. You can correlate this with the movie industry today I think.

Accepted norm changes, I think that obvious ones are things like perceptions of LGBT stuff. Perhaps it could go the the other way? They might look at liberals putting the World to rights and thinking, WHAT WERE THEY THINKING!!!?? You need a few decades of the right pushing back perhaps for that. We will see how the Trump agenda goes. I think too many people assume that change just happens by itself. I have a theory which is impossible to prove, that the election of Trump got women and in particular Rose McGowen to say, "right, enough of this, shit, remember that ogre Weinstein?"

If we don't watch it, things could slide back in some regard. Other than that there may be something that you really never expected. I did not expect the #metoo thing. However, I am not a woman so that makes sense. Watching out for your own personal filter bubble is the lesson learnt.

on the whole i think that society is progressing into a more liberal direction, with more and more rights being given to people who didn't have them before, with more tolerance to gender roles, race etc. But, as you said it can slide back... if we don't take care of the bigger issues like the environment, economy, foreign policy... then the social progress will suffer too. People don't care about the rights of other's when they live in fear themselves...

Jim, you are so good at writing this stuff. Post all the advert of social realism, people would love it!

That is a good idea I think
