Manganese activates many enzymes, both in the body of animals and humans, and therefore refers to the necessary elements. Manganese helps to assimilate fats, and is also necessary for choline to fulfill its role in the metabolism of fats.

Rich sources of manganese - wheat germ, nuts, bran, green leafy vegetables, uncooked grain (provided that the plants grew on healthy soils). However, if there is a lot of iron in the soil or mineral fertilizers are used, the plants poorly absorb manganese. As in the case of zinc, with the excess intake of phosphorus, manganese absorption is disrupted.

It is known that in the case of manganese deficiency, growth slows down in animals, joints and skeleton are deformed, coordination of movements and ability to maintain equilibrium are disturbed. While outwardly the animals are hyperactive, their reproductive function is impaired: the females become sterile, and the males lose potency.

It has been noticed that supplements of choline and inositol sometimes eliminate symptoms of manganese deficiency. In those cases when the animals had congenital defects, in particular, resembling pseudo-paralytic myasthenia gravis in man, feeding to pregnant females of manganese additives allowed avoiding developmental defects in the offspring. It has been suggested that a lack of manganese can also be related to the pathogenesis of lupus erythematosus.

Dr. E. Josefson reports on the complete cure of a severe pseudo-paralytic myasthenia gravis with a patient's satisfaction for a few weeks of a full-fledged diet with the addition of 50 mg of manganese with each meal. This doctor came to the conviction that manganese is absolutely non-toxic.

Some learned men still believe that man's need for manganese has not yet been determined, and the need to include it in the number of food supplements would have to be proved.
