First of all, a lot of Brazilians believes in Iemanjá - the queen of the sea - and because of that many people leave a rose in the sea. There is a belief that when you offer to Iemanjá a rose, she'll take all your problems to the deep of the sea and they will return as waves. |
Furthermore, what is still common is jumping seven waves. According to superstition, when seven waves are jumped Iemanjá is invoked, and she'll help to overcome the future problems. |
Another interesting tradition and superstition are connected to the color of the clothes. What is really common in Brazil is to wear white clothes on New Year's Eve. According to tradition, wearing white clothes will bring peace. Because of that many stores take advantage to sell white clothes. |
Besides white, many Brazilians use to wear red and yellow clothes because they believe that that colors will bring love and money. |

Regarding food, grape and lentil are one of most common foods on New Year's Eve in Brazil. Many Brazilians believe eating lentil will bring abundance and grape will bring good luck. |
Champagne and sparkling wine - these drinks are still part of the Brazilians traditional because they are made of grape which represents good luck. Furthermore, they represent the celebration of the life. |
