Someday, it will not be merely ASIC nor GPU; there is some clever person out there that will introduce distributed mining on smartphones/Tesla panels/machines, which will be called an entirely different name and shape than the rectangle we know today.
Yes. There is already different types of mining such as POS and masternodes. We're going into virtual mining and there might be more coming with new and improved ideas.
