First Things First: Should I Even Use Cryptocurrencies for Anything?

Yes! Yes!! Absolutely yess!!! And I must, first and foremost, congratulate Steemians, because I consider anyone who blogs on Steemit an already enlightened crypto user (at least to some extent). The Blockchain technology, the driving force behind cryptocurrencies has an almost endless list of uses - from payment solutions (e.g. Bitcoin, Ripple and Verge), to data storage and management (e.g. Sia and Tierion), socializing (e.g. Steem), professional networking (e.g. Indorse), market predictions (e.g. Cindicator), to advertising (e.g. AdEx) and Smart contracts and app development (Ethereum). The list is almost endless.

It is no longer news that a lot of governments are now paying more attention to cryptocurrencies. To most of those in government, they believe that they are campaigning against the use of cryptocurrencies, or at least that they are restricting its use. In reality, what they have been doing is giving more publicity to cryptocurrencies!

Late last year, the government of China rolled out several sanctions, including the ban on cryptocurrency trading. We all know one of the outcomes of that move - within a space of four months the price of Bitcoin rose to an all time high of almost $20000 to one Bitcoin!

South Korea has flirted (or is still flirting) with a similar idea in the past month. This led to protests in that country as well, making people in the Korean government to come out and say they have no plans to ban cryptocurrency trading.

The controversies may continue for a while, and this may even continue to keep the prices of cryptos down. But the truth is that cryptocurrencies have come to stay. Governments may try as much as they want to stop them, but the best they can (and should) do is to regulate the activities surrounding the use of cryptocurrencies.

I have not been around long enough, but I could imagine that when the Internet began to gain prominence a lot of people tried to resist the technology. Today, not only have they all embraced it, we find several instances of university professors struggling to learn how to use the Internet!

Right now, most of those in government trying to make laws on cryptocurrencies know next to nothing about them. Some of these individuals cannot even successfully mention three of these currencies!

Bottom line, join the cryptoworld now and you can rest assured you would still be one of the earliest to join in. It might have been almost ten years since the first cryptocurrency was introduced, but these have mostly been years of struggle, denial and competition for attention and acceptance. The bubble is about to burst (yes, I said it!), but in a good way. Cryptocurrencies are just about to be given the due attention and recognition they deserve. Already, most of the people that matter (interestingly, including some key individuals in government) have already fully embraced the Blockchain technology. So, what are you waiting for?
