Can I use the bittrex wallet to participate or do i need to download desktop wallet?

needs to be a desktop wallet ideally. sites like polo and bittrex send the payments from there cold wallets usual which means if someone wins instead of going to their deposit address it will get sent to the cold wallet instead.
Alternatively you can create an online wallet without the need of downloading any files.

just make sure you note the passphrase you use down. you can either click current user and create your own passphrase or new user and let the password generator make one for you
If you send directly from from Bittrex and win you will NOT get your money. The reason being Bittrex requires an additional message that is omitted by the lottery payment system. Polo has the same issues just slightly different, the funds come from the global Polo wallet not your deposit address there for if you win and the funds come from Polo, Polo will get your winning and not know who to credit it to.
