Introducing Ethermon on Decentraland!
Capture, buy, sell, and battle Etheremon in the Decentraland Metaverse!
"The team here at Decentraland is happy to announce an Etheremon integration with Decentraland! Etheremon is a crypto-collectible game revolving around digital monsters that users can discover, buy, sell, train, evolve, and battle against other monsters. This will be one of the first projects built using our developer SDK.
Etheremon has advanced crypto-collectibles into the realm of online gaming by introducing social and interactive features not often seen in other dApps. This integration with Decentraland will take that level of interaction one step further by making Etheremon available within Genesis City. By bringing Etheremon into Decentraland’s virtual reality, crypto-collectible gaming will become far more immersive and memorable.
You can look forward to discovering new Etheremon while exploring the world. You will be able to interact with your Etheremon and put them on display for others to see. You will be able to train your Etheremon in gyms, and battle them against other users’ monsters in Etheremon castles. All of this functionality will be fully decentralized and hosted on the Ethereum blockchain.
How we got here: A (very) brief history of crypto-collectibles
Crypto-collectibles are represented by non-fungible tokens (NFTs). These tokens are what signify the unique digital assets stored on a decentralized blockchain, and first appeared as the ERC20 inspired CryptoPunks. While ERC20 based crypto-currencies had been around for years before the first CryptoPunk saw daylight, Larva Labs’ innovation to create colorful digital assets whose owners could be tracked and verified on a blockchain ushered in the immensely popular crypto-collectible.
Cryptocurrencies (fungible tokens) provided an undeniable utility — hence their rise into mainstream popularity. However, non-fungible digital assets presented an interesting and novel use of blockchain technology that tapped into an age-old hobby harking back to baseball cards and postage stamps. It wasn’t long after CryptoPunks that we saw the arrival of RarePepeWallet and then CryptoKitties, which was built on the backbone of ERC721, ERC20’s successor as the standard for crypto-collectibles.
Decentraland’s very own LAND — our tokenized parcels of virtual space — is built according to ERC821, the latest standard for NFTs, and is a crypto-collectible in its own right. Despite the success of CryptoPunks, RarePepeWallet, and CryptoKitties, there was still something missing from the crypto-collectible experience…
Need for interactive crypto-collectibles
One thing that most existing crypto-collectibles have in common is the limited ways in which their owners are able to interact with them. Beyond the acts of buying, selling, and displaying your digital assets, there isn’t very much that you can do with them. From an online gaming perspective, most crypto-collectibles are lacking.
This is where Etheremon steps in.
What is Etheremon?
Etheremon is an Ethereum-based game focused on digital monsters called Etheremon. Like most crypto-collectible games, Etheremon is based on the discover/buy/sell/trade model- however it’s taken one step further by allowing users to train and modify their Etheremon before pitting them against other monsters in battle. This added level of complexity and social interaction makes Etheremon an exciting evolution in the world of crypto-collectibles.
There are different species of these Ether monsters in the Etheremon world, with each monster characterised by 1 to 3 different types selected from 17 possibilities (insect, dragon, mystic, etc.). Each type has some advantage in battle over another type, making combat more interesting and unpredictable. Each Etheremon also possesses a battle power: the sum score based on each battle stat (health, primary attack, secondary attack, etc.).
There are two current modes for Etheremon battles: castles and gyms. Castles can be built on hills, locations that are discovered in the Etheremon world, and are owned by individual players. Gyms are a more accessible battle mode targeted toward newer players and younger Etheremon. Gyms provide up to 9 different non-player monsters that you can match your own Etheremon against. Winning these gym battles earns your Etheremon more experience, preparing them for the high-stakes battles at castles.
A significant part of the gameplay experience includes discovering, hatching, and transforming your Etheremon. Every Etheremon after the first generation has between one and three ancestors, so you can only evolve your monster if you own all of its ancestors. You can also hatch Etheremon from eggs, which are laid by monsters that have reached a certain level.
Each of these gameplay components contributes to Etheremon’s overall appeal as a more complex, organic, and social experience. The Etheremon team has taken static digital assets and turned them into dynamic digital creatures.
Etheremon within Decentraland
Integrating Etheremon into Decentraland is the natural next step, and will enrich your experience on both platforms. LAND owners can attract new visitors by hosting discoverable Etheremon on their parcels. This should encourage more open exploration of Genesis City, increasing the discoverability of other content and raising the value of different parcels of LAND.
Etheremon collectors can look forward to capturing new monsters while roaming Genesis City, and any Etheremon you already own will easily be showcased to other users. Most notably, the ability to bring your Etheremon into three dimensional training gyms and castles will add a whole new level of immersion to your experience with Etheremon. The teams from Etheremon and Decentraland are excited to come together to push forward crypto-collectible gaming.
When will this happen?
Our teams are actively developing this integration, and hope to include the Etheremon experience with the official launch of the Decentraland platform! Stay tuned for more more updates."
