Normalising Crypto

By now you may have read about our newest update: the news that GameCredits is launching a new mobile app and game store early in Q2, and that GAME will be at the heart of this.

At the time of writing, we have over 150 game developers and around 300 games signed up. These will be included on the platform when it launches, and based on the current queue of games we’ve got it’s likely that there will be as many as 1,000 by the end of June.

For developers, there are big advantages. At the moment, Google Play and the Apple Store pretty much have the market sewn up, and their monopoly means they’re able to squeeze devs for 30% commission fees on every sale – without actually doing any marketing for them. Plus devs have to wait 60 days until they’re paid. It’s an industry-wide problem that particularly hits indie game developers, who need every penny they can get as soon as possible. We’re going to do everything we can to address that. Gamers, of course, will be able to access every game on the platform and pay for everything in them with GAME, which they’ll be able to buy easily with a credit card or PayPal through the new wallet.

All of this is pretty amazing. We’re certain it’s the largest deployment of crypto to a real-world business case that has ever happened. Hundreds of game developers, each with anything between hundreds and millions of customers. This is the moment that not just GAME but cryptocurrency in general arrives at the mainstream.

However, most users won’t even need to know what they’re using. The currency may be GAME, but all of the blockchain tech happens under the hood. As far as they’re concerned, they’re buying a dedicated currency for gaming, spending it and otherwise going about their business as usual – except that they’re suddenly getting a better UX and better value for money. For the developers it will be much the same, with quicker and larger payouts.

So there’s something more significant than the adoption of gamecredits going on. The rollout of the new app and game store will represent the normalisation of cryptocurrency in the real world. Potentially millions of people could end up using it, very few of whom will realise or care what’s going on under the surface. Up until this point, crypto has been a specialist, almost hobbyist endeavour. It’s grown up a lot in the last couple of years, but there are still very few real use cases. In many quarters it’s still seen as a solution without a problem.

We’re weeks away from changing that forever.
