Decentralization to the Rescue – Bitnation: Technology (3/4)

in #cryptocurrency6 years ago (edited)

Blockchain agnostic

Bitnation’s technology is one of the harder to grasp, since it doesn’t rely on its own Blockchain. In fact, Bitnation is sort of decentralized nomad utilizing any Blockchain that the certain community choses to occupy. Since the core element of all communities created on Bitnation are smart contracts, the platform is interoperable with any smart contract Blockchain.

It has been created on an Ethereum Blockchain and it still has Lucy attached to a smart contract there. Lucy is an external “memory” for Bitnation, or in other words its Exocortex. Lucy is responsible for distribution of the PAT according to users’ reputation scores. So far Lucy operates and does its job through Ethereum, but she is portable to any smart contract friendly platform too.

In my honest opinion it is highly likely that future communities followed by Lucy herself will utilize faster and better smart contract platforms. It’s a really good sign that Bitnation counts with that possibility from the very beginning. It’s also worth noting that Bitnation is interoperable with Bitcoin too through its smart contract layer called Rootstock.

IPFS (Inter-Planetary File System)

IPFS, apart from having one of the coolest names I’ve ever seen (the founder is a true visionary I guess), is being used by vast majority of platforms that need to store lot of capacious documents. Bitnation is not an exception. IPFS basically is a decentralized peer-to-peer storage platform that is interoperable with Blockchains.

IPFS though lacks its own encryption functionalities. Everything stored in IPFS is Open Access. Bitnation therefore uses another encryption layer on top of IPFS to ensure that confidential files remain private. There are several methods that can be used in order to accomplish that. There could be for example multi signature requirements. Documents could also be accessible only for citizens of an involved community. Files can also be encrypted for everyone until the time comes, when they are decrypted automatically. This can be the case for encrypted evidences that are revealed when the trial takes place for instance.

Quantum proof

To be honest I don’t really know as of yet what to think about Quantum PCs in general. I am aware of the fact, that when they are online, encryption algorithms such as RSA are going to be rendered useless. There are though different things I’m confused about. I have been trying to keep up with the “Quantum news” but, in all honesty, I failed miserably. I have been exposed to totally contradicting news, ranging from “First Quantum PC has been build and costs several billions”, over “Quantum PCs are theoretically build but humanity isn’t able to keep them online for as long as is needed to do anything with them” to “humanity is never going to be able to build a working Quantum PCs”. I don’t know what to believe for I can’t validate those news as of yet.

Thus said I can’t really make an educated statement, whether it is worth to implement Quantum proof encryption algorithms. I don’t know how “costly” in terms of energy they are compared to simpler encryption algorithms such as RSA. I don’t know whether Quantum technology is an imminent threat, or whether there still is time and we should concentrate on different aspects. Then again people that have billions of dollars in the game probably know better than I do :). Bitnation though is Quantum proof even now whatever it truly means…

Mobile first approach

Bitnation chose a very unique mobile first approach. That means that the platform is mainly “contacted” via mobile app. Thus said, all agreements between the users, trades, file shares, even the nations themselves are initiated through a conversation on a WhatsApp like app. This is really hard to imagine for me. I totally understand why it’s VERY USEFUL to have a complex WhatsApp like app to initiate all sorts of agreements and other inter-user interactions. But…

In my Bachelor’s thesis I argued that using mobile devices for information absorption isn’t desirable, for information overload arrives much faster than when people use big screens. Management of bigger nations simply cannot be done via chat like app. Or it can, but it will fail miserably with most of the citizens having no clue what is going on. I think that having a “mobile first” approach is a mistake. Mobile devices have their great use cases, but porting all the important aspects to a chat like app isn’t going to cut it. People will miss too much information. It is great that the project already has such a useful working app – it actually is essential for inter-user communication and initiation of minor agreements! I would now suggest to switch the orientation and create superb “big screen” UIs in order for the nations to be able to operate themselves effectively. It is crucial to have an option to see all the important information at once, or to have it accessible from one uncluttered place.

Btw I don’t even own a smart phone. Here…I said it…

Proof-of-concept

It is though very important to say that Bitnation plays a crucial Proof-of-concept role. It’s after all a decentralized project, first of its kind at that, therefore it is fully open sourced. Everyone can use the code, make some changes and fork the system. The system itself is also subject to change, even more so due to its “nomic” nature.

It has already started strong with some great features and apps at its disposal. The project is very young and has a bright future ahead if it’s going to continue to improve. Now it has to concentrate mainly on the “big screen” approach. When it tries to create something AS COMPLEX as “Governance 2.0” it can’t simply stay in a mobile version for ever, due to the facts stated above.
