Verifiable Digital Identity & its importance for Effect Force
As more and more parts of our lives take place online, it is becoming increasingly clear that we are in need of a standardized and secure method of verifying our identities in digital spaces. In fact, even using the descriptor ‘online’ has become all but archaic now that almost everything, from work to leisure, to private life and various ways of personal expression, is in some way connected to an online platform facilitating that particular activity. However, since a lot of these platforms have been built upon rapidly aging systems and architecture, the levels of security and the range of options afforded by these services are limited in the vast majority of cases. Moreover, our online identities have been nothing more than an abstract of their real world counterparts and they have provided only a fraction of their potential versatility. Until now.
New Horizons for Identity
Thankfully, there are a number of players making considerable headway with the development of a Verifiable Digital Identity (VDI), making it possible to use one unalterable profile for all online identification much like you would a passport in offline scenarios. This might not seem all that exciting, but the potential use cases go far beyond just being able to use one profile for all your online shopping. For instance, an individual who is using VDI and has associated with that online profile his or her offline identification documents, diplomas and certificates, inoculation history, etc. will be able to do anything from travelling abroad and checking into a hotel to trying for a new career in a new town using nothing but a phone and a fingerprint. In most cases, the companies working on VDI are relying on blockchain technology to make it work. A blockchain is unique in the sense that it is a trustless and immutable ledger over which no one organization has total control. This makes it perfect to store and verify something as sensitive and important as an individual’s profile and associated documents.
Effect Force
The connection between the Effect Force platform — Effect.AI’s decentralized solution for the outsourcing of micro-tasks — and Verifiable Digital Identity might not be readily apparent, but the number of possible applications of VDI in a platform like Effect Force are myriad. The launch of Effect Force is approaching rapidly and it will offer a wide range of tasks (or jobs) with varying levels of difficulty. Consider the example of applying for a job using VDI in the previous paragraph: in the early stages, the platform will focus mostly on the the types of tasks traditionally associated with mechanical Turk platforms, such as audio transcription and image classification. While Effect Force aims for a high level of quality for all tasks performed, these categories do not require the same amount of experience or skill as some of the more advanced tasks the platform will also support down the line. However, once more advanced tasks find their way onto the platform, we will need some way of determining the qualifications of the workers that complete tasks on Effect Force. We have already incorporated the Effect Reputation Score as a way of gauging the capabilities of workers on the platform, but this system has its limits. The Effect Reputation score will speak to a Worker’s reliability, but not necessarily to abilities in a specific field. A possible way to augment these metrics, therefore, is encouraging workers to use VDI and upload their diplomas, certificates and other documents that prove they have experience in a specialized field. This will allow us to reserve certain tasks on the Effect Force platform for a subset of workers that is most qualified for that type of work.
