Cryptos and Bootcamps

I’m about to start my first day on the job as a mentor at a coding boot camp. I graduated from the same boot camp three months ago and I’m stoked to now be a mentor there. I remember my first day as a student, everything felt so new. I had doubts about being able to learn so much stuff in only three months and I was nervous that I might not be able to handle it.

Looking back I’m so glad that I stuck it out and put all that effort in. Now going forward I’m excited to help the new students settle in, and grow as developers. I’m feeling some of the same nervousness now that I did when I was first starting as a student, although this time I’m nervous that I might not be able to properly explain or teach some topics. I know that teaching is one of the best ways to learn, so hopefully by the end I will have grown as a developer as much as my students.

I found a place to live that is close to my new job, so the commute will be easy. The guys I will be living with all seem nice and one of the first things we talked about was cryptocurrencies. There are so many now and when I first started my boot camp, only three months ago, the prices of many coins were mere cents, now they are upwards of ten or twenty dollars. This is a crazy time to be alive, many people are making fortunes buying these obscure coins, some of them don’t even have developers behind them or a viable application.

Recently on twitter some developers have been discouraged by this pumping up of prices. It seems that people are more concerned about making money, then creating decentralized systems and revolutionizing the way we interact with money. I hope developers don’t lose hope because there are still many people who believe in this original vision. I for one don’t mind making a quick buck off of a cryptocurrency, but I also think the changes these technologies can make in the future far outweigh any short term profits.
