“Miscommunikation” (New Animated Crypto Art) by Richard F. Yates
Hey folkerinos, it’s your old pal, Richard F. Yates, the Holy Fool, back with a new piece of ART. (Yep. Capital letters. It’s that serious.) For today’s work, I’m bringing my PAYING gig into the picture and sharing with you a bit of yesterday’s (slightly fictionalized) 9 to 5 drama. (Actually, I worked from 3:30 to 8:30 P.M., not 9 to 5---but “3:30 to 8:30 drama” just doesn’t have the same ring to it…)
Anyway, we had a broken receipt printer at work yesterday, and it kept kicking out these weird chunks of gibberish. Over and over. I couldn’t tell what it was trying to say, but I thought it looked cool, so I took a photo of it.
Then---because I am who I am---I decided that I could make it into a weird, 1980’s, MTV style animated thing by drawing a bunch of junk all over the image. (All digital color and embellishments, of course. I COULD have taken the image and printed a slug of copies at a print shop---my printer has been out of ink for months---and then hand colored them, THEN re-scanned or photographed them, and THEN made an animated gif out of the results---and if I HAD done that the images might be even more weird, but I’m actually happy with the animation as it is…)
The piece itself is being tokenized on the Ethereum blockchain by the happy hooligans at MakersPlace, who are very kind and let me make all kinds of weird things and post them on their site. If you want to SEE some of that strange stuff, just follow this linky-poo to my MakersPlace store / slash / gallery. (And, yes, I like writing it that way.) The work is being released as a single edition of ONE and will not be reprinted, so it’s a first come, first served sort of deal. Because Steemit sometimes has trouble with big images, I’m just going to share a few of the “slides” from the animation. To see the whole shebang, go to my gallery and click the image. (Just looking at it is free, so that’s something!) Hopefully, it will amuse you a tiny bit!
Here’s what I WROTE to “explain” the piece…
The machine was trying to tell us something... It kicked out ream after ream of what seemed like gibberish (to us,) but it seemed frantic to communicate.
We were too insensitive---too incapable of understanding---and so, the machine quit. It said, "Screw you people and your inability to see beyond your limited personal interests. I'm out!" And it walked out of the building.
And we had to write out all of our sales for the rest of the night (by HAND!) It was like traveling back to a time BEFORE time, when people couldn't depend on machines to do all of their work for them. I grabbed a few rocks and started chipping away at them, trying to make a flint axe. (It came in handy on my next delivery, as I had to defend myself against a giant saber-toothed alley cat... The tip on that delivery was pretty good, though, so it was worth it...)
