BANDZ: It's time to decentralize the Internet

The world of telecommunications is evolving rapidly, the number of intelligent devices that need to be connected to the Internet is increasing. Devices with greater processing capabilities have made possible the creation of websites with more enriched content, thanks to this the data traffic has increased in the last decade considerably, if we compare the websites of a decade ago with those of today we will notice that more data needs to be downloaded to open current pages this along with the trend of being constantly communicated through social networking applications with availability of text, voice and video communication makes the data traffic is increasing. We can compare the Internet with a highway, where each user travels through a channel with a road width layout to reach the desired site, in this case the information needs a bandwidth to reach the devices, the speed of data upload and download is proportional to the bandwidth, so that Internet providers have based their rates on the amount of bandwidth the customer wants, this is not a problem when we are in the local area, but if we change areas we may find that we no longer have coverage from our local provider, we need to be connected to be able to use the applications that keep us in touch with our family members, so in most cases not finding a free wifi network we end up paying large amounts of money for a roaming or roaming service.

While waiting for his flight back to his country, Ogaga turned on data roaming to check for new mails in his mail box. He got a SMS warning him about data charges. He hurriedly went back to turn off data roaming, but before he did that, over 200USD worth of data had been used up. He didn’t even know how much data he used.

Benefits of a Decentralized Internet:
It is true that no one man owns the internet, however, centralized services currently support stuffs like web hosting, cloud computing, social media, search engines, DNS services etc. These services use and rely on resources that are concentrated in a few number of physical or virtual servers. This approach makes it easier and convenient for companies to maintain their services. If anything happen to these few physical/virtual servers, all functionalities are lost. Thus, data can be lost, monetized, and/or given to the government, without users knowing. Thus, companies can act in their own interest, which can harm users who may not even know.

However, with a decentralized internet, a large number of users and independent machines would be in control. This would make the internet less liable to attack. With the blockchain decentralizing the internet, DDoS attacks can be prevented. (DDoS means Distributed Denial-of-Service. DDoS is a type of electronic attack, that shuts down servers, hence making the server inaccessible for a period of time).

A decentralized internet would also ensure a decentralized domain name system (DNS). The DNS server is the one that translates website names that we type in into an IP address and connects to the host. An attack on the DNS server causes great problems and issues – large internet outages, lack of access to services, data storage hacks. Data storage allows for massive data braeches at companies (e.g Equifax, earlier in the year 2017). All these can be prevented with a decentralized internet ensuring a decentralized domain system name (DNS).

This network tends to decentralize and remove the full autonomy possessed by internet service providers and to ensure that end users do not have to pay exorbitant prices for internet usage, end users do not have to change simcards or phone just to have access connect to the internet, end users do not have to worry about the problem associated with roaming. Now how does the BANDZ network intend to achieve this? The answer is simple; it is through the power of the blockchain technology.

Recently the blockchain network has been changing lives positively all over the globe. In my country for example were a student graduates from university with no full assurance of job opportunity, blockchain has gainfully employed vast majority of the youth today but the challenge we are faced currently is interruption to internet access and usage by our network providers, most times you subscribe and you don’t get full satisfaction for the data used.

I think the best way bandz can get rid of needless roaming charge is to set a unified data charging rate for roaming irrespective of the location where one is. With this, one is sure and aware of the fixed rate and won’t worry about having to pay different rate for different location

Cyprianj roaming: use case
Cyprianj travels from Nigeria to see his elder brother in the U.S. Missing his favourite Nigerian nollywood movies, he decides to connect to the internet to search and stream movies. He watched and enjoyed his favourite movies at a roaming fee of 4bandz tokens per 1hour. Since he had a total of 8bandz tokens, he watched the movie which lasted for only 1hour and reserved the remaining 4bandz tokens for the next movie he will watch when he travels to Germany for a conference. He later travels to Germany and also wishes to watch nollywood movies. He connects to the bandz network since the fee charged for roaming is same with what he was charged when he travelled to U.S. He was able to watch his favourite nollywood movie at the same roaming fee in Germany for 1hour.
