Crypto miners are using YouTube ads to score Monero Coins

in #crypto7 years ago

Some YouTube ads have a JavaScript code that forces your computer to be a CPU-draining cryptocurrency miner. The parties doing this are earning Monero, and no one knows how much they've earned in the time those ads have been running. Google has stepped into help fight the problem, so we'll see how that turns out.

It's not only ads doing this. In general java script can be coded to mine crypto on anyone's PC, that runs the script. So if you like your electric bill to stay low, better get a script blocker. Or watch your CPU usage every now and then and avoid sides that do this.

I think this is just the beginning, computational theft will become more and more common. The less trustworthy exchanges and online wallets could be using this as a skimming tactic. Hopefully all browser dev teams can issue a patch to remove this vulnerability. Hopefully Facebook, Amazon, Twitter, Twitch, Reddit, and other global leaders in the online space that lease/sell ad space on their platforms are also now aware of this problem and have implemented server side patches to fix this.

Opera recently added a NoCoin option. I guess it is needed.

Nice to see you here Matt, good to see more YouTubers posting over here. I'm very hopeful for this platform. If YouTube keeps making decisions that are not in the interest of its creators and even users like we see here, I think we'll only see alternatives like Dtube increase in popularity.

use Brave browser no ads

I use Opera with both AdBlock and NoCoin active and so should everybody.

I didn't even know that things like this were possible. My electricity bills have skyrocketed, but that's because it's winter in Canada and my apartment doesn't generate heat XD Space heaters take so much electricity T_T
