It is my understanding that one of the biggest issues that developers of blockchains have been pushing for is the decentralization of the Internet. The original communication network of computers was developed by the U.S. military to be physically decentralized so that it could survive a nuclear attack. Blockchains would decentralize information for the same reason why their is a movement to make copies of the Internet.
