The world of medical healthcare services is one that is growing at an impressive massive rate but one of the challenges facing the healthcare industry in our world today is that of trust and security. Research shows that the loss in healthcare breaches (i.e. unauthorized disclosure of individual private healthcare information) in the United States is estimated to be at a mouth dropping $6 billion yearly. Over the years, medical records and data of individuals and patients have been stored in a centralized system. The issue with this method of storage is the fact that it is at the risk for outside hacks and data loss of all sorts as individual personal healthcare information and patient medical records are been compromised on a daily basis, giving rise for complaints and ineffectiveness in the medical healthcare services rendered by healthcare institutions. In this system of storing medical data, the privacy of patients is not guaranteed. Another issue is that of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996 that prohibits the sharing of individual medical data. The challenge with this law is that it restricts the accessibility of individual medical data to medical institutions thereby eliminating complete control over data by individuals. This act has given rise to inefficiency in the exchange of medical information between individuals and medical institutions. Without precise information about a patient’s health status, doctors and medical service personnel’s are restricted in administering proper medical related services to their patients.

With all of these issues surrounding the health care industry, it places the industry in dire need of systematic change if it wants to attain sustainable growth and efficiency in service provision.
