Crypto COIN FESTS are Here!
Bitcoin is more than a digital currency. Bitcoin is more than an encrypted Internet protocol. Bitcoin is a philosophy. Bitcoin is a new way of thinking. It’s about economic fairness, empowerment, equality, privacy, expediency and cutting-edge technology.
CoinFest is the annual celebratory manifestation of that philosophy, and this decentralized convention for decentralized currency is back, worldwide, all this week, climaxing on April 5, the rumored birthday of Satoshi Nakamoto, and concluding on Sunday, April 7. Featured celebrations this year are highlighted in the map, above.
Events will include local events in 30+ cities, and geographically decentralized activities such as the International Hangout and the Decentralized Arcade, which allow mass participation on a global scale. At the Decentralized Arcade,
‘Video games are on the rise, merging the worlds of gaming and FinTech with cryptocurrency integration and advanced Blockchain functions’
CoinFest originated in Vancouver in 2013. It spread throughout Canada and to other countries in 2014. By 2015 it was truly intercontinental.
‘CoinFest is strictly non-profit. To encourage the mainstream public to attend this fun and educational event, attendance is always free.’
As for the awkwardly central website, it explains:
“CoinFest will inevitably turn into a decentralized autonomous organization, to which the founder will grant ownership of CoinFest.com, .org, .net, etc.; various organizers holding additional CoinFest domain names or other assets are expected to do the same. The authority of the lead organizer will be gradually eroded as the functionality of the CoinFest DAO improves, until CoinFest is left truly uncontrolled or owned by anyone. Representatives and important decisions will be decided by vote on the Blockchain, and representatives’ admin powers can be revoked at any time.”
To help prove the viability of a fiat-free organization and reward Bitcoin acceptance with customers and publicity, CoinFest events are only held at venues that support alternative currency, such as the General Assembly in Washington, DC.
Besides Bitcoin, there are hundreds of other alternative coins, called Alts, such as Litecoin and DOGEcoin. Exhibitors and guests are discouraged from using fiat, except for the purpose of purchasing alternative currency.
Previous CoinFests have taken place in Ghana, Tanzania and Botswana and featured trade shows, demonstrations, speakers, media halls, mining demonstrations, conferences and, of course, revolutionary parties! CoinFest features Decentralized Dance Parties, an alcohol-free Party Revolution on a mission to bring about World Peace.
Seriously. They have a Manifesto.
There is still time to get involved: volunteer, sponsor, start your own spontaneous CoinFest, or donate to the cause:
