Pi Network: How much is Pi worth?
So you’ve been collecting Pi Tokens in the Pi Network app for some time now and you’re starting to wonder what they’re worth. Well, the straightforward answer from Pi’s FAQ is that they’re worth absolutely nothing.
You may have seen other cryptocurrencies on exchanges which are also called Pi such as “Pi Network (IOU)” and “Pchain (PI)” but these are NOT actually from Pi Network. We know these cannot be the same Pi because the real Pi Network isn’t currently on the blockchain.
What is the value of Pi?
Today Pi is worth approximately 0 dollars / euro etc. similar to Bitcoin in 2008. Pi’s value will be backed by the time, attention, goods, and services offered by other members of the network.
What is the value of Pi?
Despite this, the future token clearly has some value. The first recorded purchase using Pi was by the Pi team themselves to buy a domain. There have also been a number of purchases using the in-app marketplace. Everything from car parts, jars of honey, cameras to video editing services. The biggest purchase I’ve seen is a $1800 laptop for 1800 Pi!
Although Pi has been traded between users of the marketplace for what I would perceive as a high value (around $10/Pi). The users permitted to use the Pi Marketplace beta would have a higher than average opinion on the fledgling unit of currency. I do not believe the speculated value of a small group of enthusiasts will reflect the community as a whole.
Some members of the community have even decided amongst themselves that Pi is worth $100 each and trade between themselves at this price.
So why does Pi Network say it is worth nothing?
Well, they can’t say anything otherwise. Could you imagine just cutting up some pieces of paper and saying they’re worth X amount of money? I’d be working on my own cryptocurrency right now and minting a load.
This time next week I’d be living in a palace!
The Perceived Value of Pi
While I’m sure you could write an entire thesis on how worth is determined. In terms of Pi, value is currently determined purely by the users of the in-app marketplace. We have very few metrics to go by. We have a rough idea of the number of users and the estimated amount of Pi currently in the market.
Speculation is playing a key factor and while Pi might be worth nothing to one user, someone who sees real potential in the future cryptocurrency values it a lot higher.
What will Pi be worth in the future?
Many people believe that Pi will never be worth anything. The use case of the currency is brought into question often in the in-app chat.
Well, as long as Pi eventually hits mainnet and becomes a true cryptocurrency, it will have a value. Whether the value is $0.00001 or $10,000 each is completely unknown at this point.
However, when it does launch we should expect a dump of absolutely epic proportions. Whenever I dare look at the Pi chat, it is loaded with people wanting to sell and get “real money”. The majority of Pi users are not like the users currently in the Pi marketplace who appreciate the value of cryptocurrency and the potential of it.
I would hazard a guess that many will cash out at the first opportunity and not even question it.
With that said, I personally expect it to stabilise relatively quickly as I believe the fledgling crypto has great potential. Both the sales in the Pi marketplace and the hard work and commitment of the core PI team give me hope for its future.
