Double Crochet Circle - 20 September 2024

in #crochet20w28 days ago (edited)

Today I looked again at the second crochet lesson available here.

I found some yarn I bought ages ago in a shop called Poundland because sometimes it has good yarn offers.

This yarn was £2.99 or about 18 Steem. If you look at the label below you will see that it’s actually 150g so it’s not such a bad price.

The yarn itself is mainly acrylic with 9% of metallic yarn which is the reason why I bought it : it was very shiny.

The yarn construction is also very interesting as it’s made of a sort of chain. This type of yarn is called chainette; this article describes this type of yarn as :

cords [that] are really just a hollow tube, making chainette yarns that are very lightweight (even if the fibers used to create the yarn aren’t very light).

I’ve never used this sort of yarn before but I did find that I was not able to tell the difference. I believe this was because I should have used a bigger crochet hook. I had a 3.5mm crochet hook so I feel that the yarn got a bit squashed.

For my experiment I also borrowed some earrings.

I watched the video which is in Spanish here. What really helped me was the diagram that was shown at the beginning. I really love diagrams in crochet because they are like a shorthand of the written instructions. I understood there that after making a ring of 4 chains you needed to make 8 double crochet. The second row was an increase row where you'd made two double crochet in each double crochet of the row below. The final row was repeating the 16 double crochet.

image.png

I did not make the third row repeating the 16 double crochet because I I wanted to make small flat circles. I didn't really mean to join this activity to be assessed but I needed to clarify a point.

I have noticed that English speaking Steemians have translated the task and terminology into English but the term Medio Punto is not used in English. It is :

Single Crochet in US terminology or

Double Crochet in UK terminology.

We don’t use the term ‘half point’ as translated by some Steemians. Personally I think it’s very important to clarify this because once you know the basics of crochet, you can follow any patterns or even begin to make your own. Speaking a common language ( or a common jargon ) that is understood by anyone around the world makes the crochet craft (or art) a shared activity. Here's a list of crochet terms in English. Perhaps @analp or @naka05 may find it helpful.

Here’s an idea of what to do with the small circles. There are endless possibilities.

As an extension to the task I decided to see what I could make with the little circle. One possible use of this exercise is to make earrings. You can also make a necklace or a bracelet by joining the circles. What else would you make ?

I like crochet because it is forgiving in the sense that you can hide your little mistakes. I was not very happy with the centre of my circle because the hole was too big. Instead of making 4 chains I used three. That made the hole neater.

Thank you for reading!

Sort:

Thank you very much for your comment @analp.

I like posting the new crochet stitches and techniques I learn. The post I wrote here looks complicated but it's very achievable.

Here's a tutorial in Spanish that I'm sure you've seen before :

These ornaments are really versatile and can be used in colourful decorations @analp. I'm sure that people doing the course can do them if they can do chains and either double crochet (medio punto) or treble (punto alto).

Thank you for your comment and the invitation, @naka05 ! Perhaps next week 🙂

So you mean this is an invalid entry?

Hello, I'm impressed, I'm a beginner, I love that yarn, it looks like hair, seriously haha, it's beautiful, your knitting is so defined that I'm embarrassed to show mine (and you say you're not satisfied, I'm going to run away virtual haha) but well I used worsted yarn and it's regular, I did my best but I take these suggestions you leave, I really like everything handmade, decorating with fabrics made by me excites me.

Hey it is good that you clarify the term, it is a great help for the steemians who do not speak Spanish, great. Nice to know your work, see you soon.

Thank you for your comment @marito74.

Just to clarify I wasn't very happy with the centre of my circle so I undid it (I didn't include a photo). In my second attempt I made 3 chains instead of 4 so the centre looked smaller - I liked it that way and kept it.

I really liked the turquoise colour yarn you've used and your circle looks perfect 😊

🤗👍👍

Upvoted! Thank you for supporting witness @jswit.
