Crochet Coaster #1 - 22 January 2025
I saw this sleeping fox ages ago on Pinterest. The picture just showed up without me even searching but I liked it so I tried to get a pattern for it. The site was in Korean; I tried to do searches everywhere but couldn’t find a pattern. At the time I just cut and pasted this picture and its location for inspiration.
Then the other day I started noticing some really cool coasters from @marito74 here and @rmm31 here. The latter even invited me to take part in the activity.
You can find the full lesson and tutorial for a coaster here
I can already do crocheted circles but I thought this would be a unique chance to just once and for all try to make a sleeping fox myself as I couldn’t find a pattern to buy. The original sleeping fox I found is a sort of dishcloth (or scrubber) to clean dishes. My plan was to use the same concept but to use the circle as a coaster.
If you have looked at the first link, you will notice that the yarn used is fancy and fluffy. I looked for that sort of yarn online and came up with this yarn. I think this is the correct yarn because the description is :
Scrubby Yarn for Dishcloths 100g Sparkle Yarn DIY Crochet & Knitting Yarn Quick-Dry Polyester Scrubby Yarn for Knitting Dishcloths Craft Projects
The price was beyond my reach at £5.99 per 100g or about 30 Steem. As I needed 3 colours that would mean paying around £18 or around 90 Steem without any security that the project would succeed. I decided to give the fancy yarn a miss and found my own leftovers.
I started with a magic ring but I needed to keep changing colours to start giving the shape of what would later become the nose, white cheeks, body and grass.
I immediately realised the trickiest part of this project would be dealing with the different yarn ends at the back.
The photos above are the same piece but one is the front and the other one is the back. I didn’t tidy up as I went along because I wasn’t sure if it was going to work. If I repeat this, I’ll be able to neaten everything as I go along.
I very soon had to deal with the ears which stand out from the circle. The first photo shows the rounded tip of the first ear. The other photo shows you how I corrected this and made the ears pointy.
I then began to see that it was looking similar but not the same as the original. This was okay as this was my version.
I was very excited to see how it was taking shape with every row. I had to undo parts of a row to change the tail as it was sticking up too much.
From what I recall the green yarn is definitely wool and there’s wool in the other two colours but I don’t know about putting my hot cup of decaff coffee on it. @ rmm31 recommended thread which I think would look great for this project and would last longer too.
I'll show you the result shortly.
Thank you for reading !

Thank you for your support @marito74.
I love learning new techniques and finding inspiring ideas here on Steemit and also out there : magazines, Pinterest and You Tube.
It's amazing how many possibilities there are once you can make a simple crochet circle. Sadly, the price of yarn can be quite high; at least around here there are charity shops so I regularly check what people have donated in case there's any yarn 🧶🧶.
Aww, very cute fox coaster! Love the design :D

Upvoted! Thank you for supporting witness @jswit.
Abrazos.
