Vatican says that the Body of Christ can not be gluten-free
Consecrated hosts totally free of gluten are invalid for the celebration of the Eucharist, says the Catholic Church.
The Catholic Church has reminded the bishops that the Body of Christ can not be free of gluten. At the request of Pope Francis, the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments has sent a letter to the bishops in which it reminds them of the correct ingredients of bread and wine used in the Eucharist.
According to the Vatican, the Body of Christ, the blessed bread given to Catholics, must contain a small amount of gluten, while wine must be made from pure grapes not mixed with other ingredients. "Hosts that are completely free of gluten are invalid matter for the celebration of the Eucharist," says the letter, published by Vatican Radio.
Meanwhile, "low-gluten-containing hosts are valid," the letter continues. Those who can not consume bread or wine that contains gluten should drink a pressed fruit juice known as 'mustum', explains the letter.
The Catholic Church decided that holy bread should contain a "small amount" of gluten in 2003.
