Making My Own Pinky Arrows First Lessons - Archery Journal

in #creativity6 years ago (edited)

Hi everyone! Today I want to share you how to make a wooden arrow manually. I learned it from my coach at our horseback archery club in Aceh. So I have a ramin shaft and 3 pink feathers for fletching with me. And this time I will make arrows for a horsebow with draw weight 35 lbs @ 28.

So the first thing we do is find out how much shaft weight and length, find out the GPP (grains per pound), peak poundage so that we can get a good spine. Why should it fit well, because if it doesn't match the specs, it can cause the broken arrow and dry fire, which is an empty pull on the bow that can cause accidents or injury. Dry fire is highly avoided by all archers because it can cause the horsebow break, opened the layer and so on which causes the performance of the bow to be unusable. Moreover, a good bow with lamination, the more expensive of the price of the bow is usually the more spoiled guard. Now with the specifications of the arrow that matches the bow, then that is the advantage that is sought by all archers, the arrow will accelerate steadily and right towards the target.

One important aspect of archery is safety No. 1. Safety for yourself, the safety of colleagues around us and the audience. So, the equipment that will be used while practicing archery must be checked before we use it, ensuring the equipment is safe and nothing damaged. Including arrows must be in good condition from the time they were made so that they were not easily damaged.

The first step is when you have got the appropriate shaft, then we will look for the heavy end of the falling stick on which side. So when it is later shooted it has a good falling direction. The trick is to weigh it right in the center of the shaft, you can also use a pen, we see which side the weight is good, then the tip of the shaft is the place to put the arrow point. While the other side is to put nocking and feathers.

Then, mark it with a circle marker around the shaft by measuring the length of the point, then cut it thin and then streamline it, so that the arrow point fits.

The short way can use a special sharpener for arrow, but sharpening it and forming it manually is a good skill for an archer. Sharpening it thinly with a sharp cutter and then can also use sand paper. In this step you need to be careful and careful, don't let the shaft become too thin or tilted.

After the shaft has been formed, try installing the point whether it is right or not. Prepare the glue and put it around the shaft, not too much, not too little. After that let stand for a while. after the point is installed we can put it standing on a flat surface like the floor or table to see whether it is straight or not.

After that, measure the required shaft length of 28 cm. Cut the shaft. And cut the edges a little to place the nock. I use Nock from Vermil. Install it using burn glue too. Well then the shaft that has been attached to the point, the shift can be added with feathers.

Next we put the shaft into the fletching tool to attach the feathers, take one feather with the inner side given the devil glue, place the feather into a fletching clamp. Place the fletching close to the arrow shaft and wait 1-2 minutes until the glue is firm and dry. Continue until the third feather. Now, after all the feathers are attached, tie them to the legs of the feather with a nylon yarn around 1 cm in length. Glue back to stick to be strong enough. This is the second point of defense after glue, so that the feathers is not easily released.

Cut and clean the nylon that are extended, and recheck try to look between the feathers and the shaft if there is nothing wrong. Now if it's already done, then the ramin wooden arrow is ready for flight testing. : D We see if its fly straightly to the target?

You know what @khey my dear 😂 I like your "devil glue" idiom 😂 it means a powerful adhesive glue almost like satan 😅 only the Achenese and Indonesia has that word for a strong adhesive things. Just like devil chilies for the hottest chilie we ever ate👍.

Hey.. thank you for sharing this and congratulations for being exposed by the @asapers. I really love your post about the archery and horse riding club😊 are you back to Langsa again? Your research is completed?

@cicisaja how are you today? I always miss your awesome comment 😂 presicely as you mentioned above about the devil glue 😆😆 i just realized if other readers didnt get what is devil glue exactly on my post, but you helped me out explaining it well thank you 😂 yes iam back home and feel happy at home sweet home 😉 Is there an archery club in your city?

Hello @khey.. a bit hectic with the shop and my Father in law arrival from Hajj today, but well managed😉 You know what... I love reading the Achenese posts in english😂 there's always something "cute" in theirs.. just like you did in this post.

Well.. yes there are several atchery clubs here, private and not too massive. I saw some local children practicing it at the Pamulang Equestrian Club, and some kids at my neighbourhood told me that they practicing archery somewhere around south jakarta and west java borders.

So.. how much money you'd spent to make those arrows? What about the bow? Did you made it too?

Dear @cicisaja what a busy lady, may Allah bless you and your family always. What do you sell at your shop? Haha acehnese just quite bit different :D Well that sounds nice as you can easily find the place to practice the archery just in case you want it. The arrow i made about, spending around 4-5 dollars per arrow, if i buy a ready one in the shop it will be around 7-8 dollars. And we need it about a dozens or more for practice, so it will be spending about 1,3 million rupiah per dozens of arrows depends on the feathers, the wood, and the nock. Because sometimes it broken, or just lose it on the grass :D And the bow no i am not a bowyer, for making a bow it needs special knowledge that i yet learn it, it also need special attention and time to do that because more difficult than making an arrow. Mostly bowyer are man.

Am I a busy lady 😂 busy at home and steemut too😉well.. I felt like Im too old to start practicing, beside the oroblem with my left shoulder, still have some screws in it😁 that's why I quit practicing wall climbing and avoid rafting too.

I know a bowyer in lhokseumawe, I don't count how many times he gets hospitalized because the injuries while making a bow. But he seems to love his side works so much. You'd probably knew him because he is quite a goid writer too, not here on steemit but newspaper and facebook, his name is Bisma From Lhokseumawe.

Anyway, that's quite cheap .. I thought it would be expensive rather than buying it. Well..enjoy your practices and keep steeming.

Wow you are a climber and love rafting too? so do i love white water rafting and tubing rafting :D @cicisaja :D Oh the injury i am so sorry to hear that, hope you are fine always. Ya, i know him but never meet in person. Its very rare a woman choose to be a bowyer. You need to be really patience :D And yes as an archer its so much good if you are in a condition out of arrows on your side and can make it yourself just in case you re in a jungle or in war, because actually the arrows we released not always coming back

I was a climber, uhmm.. 20-25 years ago? Before I got a traffic accident, I love to try many kind of sports.. but nothing really cool as athletic for sure😆

Well.. if there is a woman from Aceh become a good bowyer😉 I hope it would be you @khey, but I don't want to hear any news about injuries 😔 so.. just becan archer then👌 let the man does the bow.

Oh, hope you are gonna be okay always @cicisaja. Yes i agree maybe some other time i will do that, learn to make a bow but for now i need to practice more my horseback archery, ride the horse and release nice shoots, adab and akhlak as an archer, mind, heart, wisdom.
