Sweet 16 Corsage: I had no idea this was a thing

As a little break from what I normally post, I wanted to share something I made at work the other day.

I'm a florist as well as a jewelry maker, and a woman called me and asked for a "sweet 16 corsage".

normal corsage
I had never heard of one so I had to look it up on the internet. I found that they are wrist corsages that don't contain flowers like a normal corsage.

They are typically made with just ribbons and candy or sugar cubes. Some are make with small packaged candies like taffy and small chocolate bars. I personally don't like those because I think it looks silly to have plastic packaging on my wrist. I also don't typically eat candy so it's a bit repulsive to me.

I did think it was cute to use the sugar cubes though. It conveys the message of "sweet" without being too tacky. Plus, it was fun to find ways to secure ordinary sugar cubes into a wrist corsage.

I used several techniques to secure them. I wrapped them in a sheer white ribbon for some. I wrapped others in pink pipe cleaners--which was easy enough. And a couple are wrapped in a white tulle material and tied at the bottom. I then ran a wire through the bottom of the tulle.

After I prepared the sugar cubes, I made my corsage bows, and put them together with paper flowers and the sugar cubes the same way I do with a normal corsage.

I really liked the way it came out in the end and so did my customer. I talked with her about the whole sweet 16 corsage thing and she said that it is kind of an old fashioned thing. Has anyone heard of them? I think they are kind of neat and I hope to make more of them!

The pink corsage was exceptionally well done! The blue/white is still very beautiful. I like how it all came together and how the colors are complimentary. Great work. You must be a perfectionist and have great passion for the things that you do. Well done...loved it!

Thank you! I am glad you enjoyed it :) I love making corsages. They are just as fun to make as jewelry I think.

I used to build surfboards....I never found it to be work....there was always immense pleasure in completing a build. Like the best that you can make and the beauty of a finished board was the payment in of itself. I can see how you derive great joy in the making of anything that you do, be that jewelry or corsages. Continue with your work as I am sure your customers must have huge beaming smiles when presented with the great work that you provide!

I'm sure the same was true of the recipients of your surf boards. :)

True, thanks.

I like the subtlety of the blue and white one.

Me too. While I think the sweet 16 corsage is fun, if I was going to wear a corsage, a flower one like the blue and white one is much more my style.
