Scheepjes Yarn - 9 April 2025

For a while now I’ve been collecting this ecru colour yarn to make myself either a cardigan or a sweater. I was extremely pleased when on a recent visit to a charity shop I came across this 55g skein of yarn. I paid £1.25 or around 9 Steem for it.

I recognised the brand name because I’ve heard it being mentioned by one of my favourite YouTube vloggers and I’m sure Sarah’s given the correct pronunciation for the brand because she's Dutch. The photo above clearly shows you the brand is Scheepjes.

Another YouTuber made a short video specifically about the pronunciation of this brand :

I’ve now visited the Scheepjes website here to familiarise myself with their products as I thought the content of the yarn I bought, 78% cotton and 22% acrylic, made it a bit special. This page displays a lot of details about the yarn including :

Cotton Yarn Stone Washed Scheepjes yarn.
Content: 78% Cotton , 22% Acrylic blend
Yarn Group: Sport Weight
Weight/length: 50 g / 1.76 oz = 130m / 142 yards
Recommended needle size: 3 - 3,5 mm
Recommended hook size: 3 - 3,5 mm
Knitting tension: 10 x 10 cm = 24 sts x 32 rows

That sort of detail was very helpful especially because someone in the charity shop placed the price sticker right where I’d see all that information. The website doesn't include any up-to-date prices but I've found that new it retails for £3.63 or about 27 Steem. So my charity shop find yielded a new type of yarn bought at less than 50% of its normal value.

The label above shows you the price I paid and the view below shows you other details like part of the gauge you can expect to get.

I thought it was interesting that the yarn is actually made in China rather than in Holland. When I got home and started investigating my yarn, thinking I’d knit a little swatch I inserted my fingers into the skein to try and find the ‘start of the yarn’. Normally this can take ages or be very messy, but I actually found it straight away !

This has to be the most thoughtful detail I’ve seen in a long time. Knitters and crocheters must know how annoying it is to find the middle ‘start’ and end up pulling all of the yarn entrails out to achieve that. The company was surely aware of that and helped us by using a round sticker which reads Easy Start on one side and the brand Scheepjes on the other.

Incidentally the website has a section for ‘free patterns’. I was interested to see what they offered and found some beautiful crocheted butterflies, but you actually need to pay for the pattern £1.23 or around 9 Steem, so I was a bit confused as to why this is described as free.

I then followed another link for a little red robin but the link didn't work for me so I found the free pattern on Ravelry; you also need to register to be able to download it.

This gave me a clear impression that the website was not updated very often which is a bit disappointing.

Thanks for reading !
