Making my own handbags

in #crafting6 years ago

My mother used to have this old Singer sewing machine that I often used to create my own dresses. I always dreamed of creating my own apparels, and then show them off to friends. But I never realised that dream.

However, for the last five years, I have begun sewing bags, on and off. When I started, I meant to raise enough funds and pay for my mother's medical cost. She was then suffering from end stage kidney failure and was going in and out of the hospital. Times were really tough those days, and I really wanted to help but my bags weren't up to par. Anyway, I did manage to sell a few, but a little too few for her medical fees, which were high. I remember the words of one of Apple's founder, Steve Jobs, concerning hospital beds: they are so expensive. I have to agree on that one.

My mother passed away, after so much suffering. I never realised the objective I set out to achieve. It is sad that I wasn't able to.

I still think of making bags, once in a while, but there are other responsibilities like jobs to finish and mouths to feed. Still sometimes, I like sitting down in front of my sewing machine. I find it a luxury to sit down and start sewing. And I often enjoy the finish product. It is always nice to craft your own bag and flaunt it to admirers.

Beautiful bag... Hopefully when you have more time and energy you can post more photos including a DIY.

I hope so too. The sewing machine keeps beckoning, beckoning, beckoning....soon, I will be creating again.

I'm so sorry for your loss @jennejohnlaj. HUGS! I know what you mean about life getting in the way. Your days raising kids are busy, stressful and FAST. The time will come when your days can be filled with sewing while your missing those crazy days. Enjoy them while you can.

Thanks for sharing that beautiful bag!

Thank you. HUGS! I try to enjoy them as much as I can as well as others I love. In this busy world, they are the only ones that make sense.

As for the bag, there are more :) Will share them in other posts.

Hi @jennejohnlaj, I just stopped back to let you know your post was one of my favourite reads and I included it in my Fiber Ramble. You can read what I wrote about your post here.

Wow. Thank you. :)

Oh, my heart. I am so sorry for your loss and feel deeply for you. This past Thursday was the 6 year anniversary of my father passing away after his struggle with end stage kidney failure. I have been working on restoring his classic car since then, so I think your sewing could become therapeutic for you. Hugs to you and your family.

I, too, am so sorry to hear about your loss. Now that I understand more clearly what end stage kidney failure entails, having gone through my mom's suffering as a daughter and one of her caregivers. Looking forward to see the restored classic car. Hugs to you too.
