There are two major categories of quenching: simultaneous heating quenching heats the entire hardening zone at the same time, and cools at the same time after stopping heating. During the heating process, the relative position of the part and the sensor remains unchanged. The simultaneous heating method can be divided into two types in application:

part rotation or non-rotation, and the cooling method can be divided into two types: falling into a water sprayer or inductor spraying. From the perspective of improving the utilization factor of the generator (except for one generator supplying multiple quenching machines), the productivity and generator utilization factor of the parts falling into the water sprayer after simultaneous heating are higher than those of the inductor spraying method.

Scanning quenching is often referred to as continuous quenching. This method only heats a part of the area to be quenched at the same time, and gradually moves the heating area to the cooling position through the relative movement between the inductor and the heated part.

Scanning quenching can also be divided into two types: non-rotation of the part (such as quenching of machine tool guide rails) and rotation (such as cylindrical long shafts). In addition, there is scanning circumferential quenching, such as quenching of the outer contour of a large cam; scanning plane quenching also belongs to the category of scanning quenching. Scanning quenching is suitable for heating a large surface area, so that the hardened layer of the stepped shaft remains continuous over the entire length, thereby improving the torsional strength of the shaft.
