Quick contest for 5 SBI: help Nate pick some herbs

in #contest6 years ago (edited)

Quick SBI contest.

Nate's needing some herbs. My plan until now has been very short on mediunal plants. Y'all know what that means...

I'll pay you SBI to help me find something!

Rules:

  1. Recommend five medicinal herbs that I can grow.
  2. Comment your entry here or make a post and drop it in the comments here.
  3. If you make a post, use the #naturalmedicine tag.
  4. Your post can be as long as you'd like it to be, but a list and uses are the minimum requirement. Copy/paste is okay, but be sure to link a source so you don't get flagged for plagiarism.
  5. Upvote/resteem not required.

Considerations:

  1. I'm in zone 8a, North Texas. Cold hardy to 10°f, heat hardy, and somewhat drought tolerant are best.
  2. These will be in a food forest. Perennials are preferred, but definitely not required.
  3. Common ailments in our home are eczema, allergies, headaches, stomach bugs, restlessness/anxiety, and sinus infections.
  4. Multifunction plants have a special place in my heart.
  5. Wife would like a pretty flower garden, so if they have pretty flowers, that's even better (wifey always wins, so consider that).
  6. We don't need comfrey, plantain, echinacea, lamb's quarter, mullein, sorrel, or yarrow. We either have those or are about to order them.

That's it! If it sounds like too much work, don't enter.

If the source is someone that'll accept ETH as payment, that gets bonus points, as I'd really prefer to buy with ETH.

Sort:

My recommendation for you would be:

  1. Calendula which could be beautiful in the flower garden plus is excellent in preparations for eczema or other skin conditions.
  2. Valerian which is great for treating anxiety. I like it in a flower garden beside the tall delphiniums. they seem to compliment each other very nicely.
  3. Scullcap is another which relaxes nervous tension and induces inner calm, even counteracting sleeplessness
4)Licorice is an expectorant, demulcent, anti-inflammatory
  4. I would have a place to cultivate some stinging nettle for it is so widely applicable and strengthens and supports the whole body. (see my post on my love affair with nettles at: https://steemit.com/naturalmedicine/@porters/my-love-affair-with-nettles )
Hope this helps and I'd be happy to discuss further the cultivation of these plants and perhaps others.

Thank you! I've been wondering about nettles recently. I want to plant them to keep my kids out of the garden 😂

Seriously though, I peaked ahead in the Permaculture Playing Cards series, and stinging nettles are coming up SOON. I need to read more about them because they sound incredibly utilitarian and beneficial. I'll go read your post now!

I guarantee once the kids have gotten into them once, they will not do it again... :))

Love @porters list!

Hahahahaha I was mostly kidding about that, but their playing on the swale berms (kids will be kids, I guess?) is getting annoying lol

It's also an opportunity to teach them some plants have very good, and VERY bad, properties and to respect them...

They will deter your kids but you can also teach them how they can use them as a weapon by pinching/holding it on the stem (not allowing any of the stinging leaves to touch you) allowing you to control who gets stung with the leaves. If a bully were chasing them they could use the nettle to back them off. It's all in the way you handle them.

@porters these are all good! If he plants all of the suggestions he gets, it will be an impressive garden for sure!

:)>

It was a cool idea to make a call out for suggestions and I'm always willing to help when it comes to gardening. I'm excited to see what he will come up with and follow it's progression.

That does sound like fun for sure, planning to raise all your own medicine is a noble effort! I have already planted what I can on the new property we bought.

:)>

I raise some of mine but most I harvest from the wild, which grow abundantly around our forest home.
Go on you for getting your new property planted up. What zone are you gardening in?

I am in NE Oklahoma, I am not sure which zone that is. I like wildcrafting myself, and i am just planting to have a more reliable source for specific medicines we use a lot of. I do not want to burden the wild plants for these items.

:)>

Good plan!

Any herbal that is grown, is the beginning of a good plan! LOL!

Greetings friend @nateonsteemit, here I leave you my recommendation:

Moringa: this plant is rich in proteins, vitamins A, B and C, and minerals: recommended for pregnant and lactating women, as well as for small children. It is also effective in curing spasms, ulcers and inflammations, and has hypocholesterolemic and hypoglycemic properties. Seeds and barks are used to treat circulatory problems.FUENTE

Enula: Highly valuable herb for respiratory ailments, helps clear mucus and has a toning calorific effect on the lungs. Use for chest infections, bronchitis, asthma or chronic cough. Take in decoction or tincture.FUENTE

Thoughts: thoughts (Viola tricolor) may be beneficial for the treatment of eczema. You can make tea with its flowers, leaves and stems and drink 3 or 4 cups a day for a few weeks. You can also make a poultice (ointment) to soothe skin rashes.FUENTE

Aloe Vera: is a great ally for improving digestion and treating digestive system problems. Studies have shown that this plant promotes the absorption of nutrients, helps eliminate harmful germs in the digestive system, acts as a reconstructor of intestinal flora and is effective in attacking the bacteria that cause stomach ulcers.FUENTE

Dandelion: its infusion has hepatic function, eliminating toxins more easily and increasing the flow of bile. Diuretic and cholesterol regulator, in addition to helping to eradicate appetite loss, anemia and constipation. It can be ingested by means of tisanes and in salads, where it will conserve all its vitamins.FUENTE

Wow, that was fast, thank you! I actually just had some dandelions in my breakfast. I'm lucky to have them growing wild here. I appreciate your entry :)

eczema, allergies, headaches, stomach bugs, restlessness/anxiety, and sinus infections.

Eczema... Aloe and calendula
Allergies...The best for this is not strictly an herbal, but I recommend it, honey from the yard!
Headaches...Fever Few is a very attractive flower, that is silent death to Migraines.
Stomach Bugs...Ginger is excellent for settling the stomach.
restlessness / anxiety...Chammomile is another flower she will like.
Sinus infection...the very best I have found for that is HOT tea, and Home made Colloidal Silver

Be sure to plant elderberry in your food forest, it is good for so Many things!
Look at Sea Buckthorne too, it is an excellent source of vitamin C that will grow well for you.
Spirea bushes are a good source of naturally occurring aspirin that is easy to make into a tea.

I was thrilled to find Mullen already growing on my new land by the lake! Good luck on your new life!

:)>

I need a way to make honey here... Wife says strictly no bees, but I think that's just while the kiddos are little.

Thanks for the recommendations, I'll look into all of them :)

My kids helped me with the bees. My Son, was just helping Dad, but My Daughter really liked it; and helped me recover swarms!

They are very tame, and not a hazard. Put them on the back of the property, and tell the kids to stay away, or get an extra bee suit....

I am glad you are planting comfrey, it is a VERY good herbal for healing! Think about planting some mushrooms too, they take time, but are worth the effort .

Be Blessed!

Karela Cucumber and kombucha tea

Love this idea @nateonsteemit! I think worthy of an actual post!

I like some of your commentors preferences. Off the top of my head what I am never without in my garden:

  1. Aloe Vera. It is amazing! Very pretty flower although only once a year. The value of aloe is endless. For skin problems or tummy problems or cuts and burns and stings. It is believed to be a mild sun screen
  2. Rosemary. This has an almost permanent profusion of pretty flowers and is extremely resilient. Bees LOVE them. Plus they give off a delicate scent. Excellent for cooking - roast dishes both meat and veggies. They are a wonderful heart tonic, great for blood circulation. It is also used to treat memory and concentration.
  3. Wormwood. Not floral or sweet smelling, in fact as you'll read in Scripture it is bitter as gall. But such a powerful healer! I use it extensively in treating parasites. My chickens self medicate by eating the seeds (shocker!) and my goats freely gulp down the leaves. It is also excellent in treating fever and tummy complaints.
  4. Chamomille is rather a delicate looking herb, and I find needs a little pampering in our area (with temperatures similar to yours) so you may not have success with it. Famously known for its calming properties. It is also great for immune boosting and treating tummy issues. Another herb almost always in bloom.
5......hard to choose as I have gardens full of herbs. Will have to think about this one.

Hey, thanks for stopping in! Aloe would be great for sure. It's a main ingredient in a lot of the wife's lotions that she already uses. Wormwood you say? I'd love to make some real absinthe :)

Id have a look at the following, shame your not closer or i could of sorted you with the seeds... offers their though for any UK Nmers 💚

  1. Chamomile, beautiful plants that the pollinators love and seems to regrow well after a harsh winter from self seeding.
  2. Nasturtium, another pritty plant that edible but has some interesting medicinal properties worth looking at. Grate for 3 sisters/companion planting etc.
  3. Sage, good hardy herb great in cooking but also has some useful medicinal properties
  4. Thyme, another great general purpose herb.
  5. Rosemary, another good hardy plant good for all things brain related, memory concentration etc.

One of the other reason i mention these as there quite common for culinary uses it normally doesnt take much to find some one with them and grt some cuttings or seeds depending on the time of yeah.

Hope your well, and some great suggestions in here added a few to my own list for 2019 😁
