I checked it 3 times with MS Word v16.12 as I judged the contest and I got 303 words. So, I just went back and checked again with Word and it came up with 303 words. So, I counted manually and I got 301. As it turns out, the ellipses (...) at the beginning of your story was counted by MS Word as a word. (... as Santiago got to the top deck, shots rang out and a bullet clipped his ear, blood started gushing out and he quickly ran for cover.), because of the space in front of the word "as"
And again, in the second paragraph the ellipses (...) in front of the word "I'll" (He yelled, "Puto take cover, they're coming ... I'll meet you at the boat!") MS Word counted as a word as well because of the space between the ellipses and the word "I'll"
I do apologize for the confusion. I have relied on MS Word many, many times for the word count. I never thought that an ellipses would be counted as a word.
I will edit the post to reflect that and I will send you 2.25$ in SBD to equal the runner-up prize of 2.50$ SBD along with the 0.025$ SBD that I already sent you. Again I do apologize.

oh! you didnt have to do that but much appreciated. i just wanted to show you, since i usually always use 2-3 programs because ive noticed the word count discrepancy myself when entering contests. some fluctuate and i didnt realize that is why! thanks for the info on the ellipses, dummy programs lol

Check your wallet, I have sent you the additional 2.25$ SBD and adjusted the amount and corrected the miscalculation on the first transfer. I must be a dummy today. Lol!
