The way we know independence, and a good part of the contemporary history of the country, is a product of the way of teaching and using it that was designed and put into practice in the 19th century. This vision of independence is composed of a gigantic production of books, school manuals and publications of all kinds, some written by the most outstanding men of letters in the country, which is known, as a whole, as the homeland historiography.

The national history represented a happy synthesis that managed to overcome the marked social diversity the apparent solidity of a homogeneous and until then unknown unit. From this principle emerged the notion of the people, quickly becoming the great protagonist of the struggle for independence. The national history covered other aspects of public life in the same unitary sense, such as economy, politics, territorial integration and, above all, the ideology that nurtured the process. In this way, the traditional interpretation starts from the idea that all Venezuelans were united in favor of a single cause. Alleged unanimity that the voice of "all together", managed to impose the idea of ​​two opposing sides, some good and others bad, amalgamated by hatred, fear and discredit of the opponent.
