The real question to consider is if It is worth taking it in for a repair or if it should be replaced without question.

If the cost of repair of a hydraulic cylinder is much more than a replacement, then the choice is obvious to just toss the old thing. Even if repairs are relatively minor, a professional will still have to charge a minimum fee and thus making it a better deal to replace in any event. If your specific type of cylinder is cheap expensive, then repairs would probably be the better option.

One of the most common issues that one may encounter with their hydraulic cylinder is that it is leaking its essential fluid. The quick solution would be to check the connections and replace sealants. If nothing seems to help the leak, it may be best to seek out a replacement.
Bent Piston Rods
This is definitely a more common issue that arises with a broken or underperforming cylinders. This may be caused by oil contaminants or an issue with the gland bearing. This would likely require a replacement of the gland bearing after a cleaning of its internals.
