Port Angeles

Good day and welcome to day 4, eh. (Hope some of you got that reference :-) )

Welcome to Port Angeles, Washington.

After a fairly uneventful customs re-meet at about 3 pm, we had seen and done enough in Friday Harbour so we weighed anchor again and headed to the US mainland for real provisioning. Was a fairly uneventful motor sail down. No wind and a few ships to contend with.

Fairly uneventful day to get there. Sunny and cool on the water. Didn't get much sailing in. Any day on the water is a good one, however.

Port Angeles was quite fun. Wandered around and checked out a few things... Found a Hot Pepper Sauce store so we stocked up on some of those.. And we had pizza.

Surprised there aren't any more pictures. Biggest thing I notices here was West Marine prices were actually reasonable, compared to what they were in Canada. :-). So we stocked up on a couple of things and then went looking for a grocery store. Found a thrift store and a couple of other stores along the way.

This was a provision for at least 2 weeks at sea. We weren't thinking it was going to take that long, but we wanted to be prepared at any rate... Not many pictures of Port Angeles. Did find this video of the trip from Ladysmith to Neah Bay though. Enjoy.

After a couple days in Port Angeles, we begun the motor out the Straits of Juan De Fuca, to Neah Bay. Most of the time there are small craft to storm warnings on this body of water. Glad this was not one of those days. Tacking out in high winds is not fun.

A little more fog rolling in. A Hardin 46, (not our boat) safely at anchor here. Several other boats are waiting for the next window to head south for 2011. Looks to be one coming in a couple of days.

Neah Bay is the last bay on the US side of Juan de Fuca Strait in the Pacific Northwest. Cape Scott is the point where we turn south once again and continue until the butter melts. Then turn left...

Strait of Juan de Fuca is a northwesterly run straight into the normal breezes. They are for the most part - nasty. Small craft warnings and Gale warnings all the time. Yet when we left - Flat calm Sunny skies and a bit of fog. Not that I was disappointed. Last thing I wanted to do was spend a day tacking up the strait into 35 knots of breeze. That is never fun.

So we are now provisioned and (what we thought to be) ready to hit the big water and follow Jimmy Cornell's route to San Francisco - 125 miles off shore. Go sailing they said. It'll be FUN they said :-). So far so good....
