Spiral wave patterns observed in models of cardiac arrhythmias and chemical oscillations develop alternans and stationary line defects, which can both be thought of as period-doubling instabilities. These instabilities are observed on bounded domains, and may be caused by the spiral core, far-field asymptotics, or boundary conditions. Here, we introduce a methodology to disentangle the impacts of each region on the instabilities by analyzing spectral properties of spiral waves and boundary sinks on bounded domains with appropriate boundary conditions. We apply our techniques to spirals formed in reaction-diffusion systems to investigate how and why alternans and line defects develop. Our results indicate that the mechanisms driving these instabilities are quite different; alternans are driven by the spiral core, whereas line defects appear from boundary effects. Moreover, we find that the shape of the alternans eigenfunction is due to the interaction of a point eigenvalue with curves of continuous spectra.

High-order frequency locking phenomena were recently observed using semiconductor lasers subject to large delayed feedbacks [B. Tykalewicz, et al., Opt. Express 24, 4239 (2016); B. Kelleher, et al., Chaos 27, 114325 (2017)]. Specifically, the relaxation oscillation (RO) frequency and a harmonic of the feedback-loop round-trip frequency coincided with the ratios 1:5 to 1:11. By analyzing the rate equations for the dynamical degrees of freedom in a laser subject to a delayed optoelectronic feedback, we show that the onset of a two-frequency train of pulses occurs through two successive bifurcations. While the first bifurcation is a primary Hopf bifurcation to the ROs, a secondary Hopf bifurcation leads to a two-frequency regime where a low frequency, proportional to the inverse of the delay, is resonant with the RO frequency. We derive an amplitude equation, valid near the first Hopf bifurcation point, and numerically observe the frequency locking. We mathematically explain this phenomenon by formulating a closed system of ordinary differential equations from our amplitude equation. Our findings motivate new experiments with particular attention to the first two bifurcations. We observe experimentally (1) the frequency locking phenomenon as we pass the secondary bifurcation point, and (2) the nearly constant slow period as the two-frequency oscillations grow in amplitude. Our results analytically confirm previous observations of frequency locking phenomena for lasers subject to a delayed optical feedback.
Experimental investigations on the nonequilibrium dynamics of pattern formation in fluid and granular systems (1905.12201v1)

Patterns are quotidian in nature. Distinct multiscale patterns are generally a consequence of nonequilibrium dynamical processes associated with mechanical or hydrodynamic instabilities. In this thesis, I report experimental investigations on pattern formation in a few examples of fluid and granular systems, and uncover the underlying mechanisms that give rise to those patterns. Leidenfrost drops are known to experience star-shaped oscillations with little damping. However, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Here I report that the hydrodynamic coupling between the rapid evaporated vapor flow and vapor-liquid interface excites the star-shaped oscillations, suggesting a purely hydrodynamic origin. Polygonal desiccation crack patterns are commonly observed in natural systems. However, it is unclear whether similar crack patterns spanning multiple length scales share the same underlying physics. I report experimental results on polygonal cracks in drying suspensions of micron-sized particles. In cornstarch-water mixtures, multi-scale crack patterns were observed due to two distinct desiccation mechanisms. We also find the characteristic area of the polygonal cracks, and film thickness obey a universal power law. Finally, I report sedimentations of non-Brownian particles in viscous fluids. We observed an effective repulsion between particles with nonuniform density in both two-body and many-body systems in two and three dimensions, in contrast to particles with uniform density. We also characterize the statistical properties of the sedimentation patterns of particles in three dimensions. The patterns I report in this thesis represent typical examples in fluid and granular systems that are driven by nonequilibrium dynamics, and the underlying mechanisms we uncover are expected to enhance our understanding of how these seemingly simple patterns arise in natural systems.

We touch upon the wide topic of discrete breather formation with a special emphasis on the the model. We start by introducing the model and discussing some of the application areas/motivational aspects of exploring time periodic, spatially localized structures, such as the discrete breathers. Our main emphasis is on the existence, and especially on the stability features of such solutions. We explore their spectral stability numerically, as well as in special limits (such as the vicinity of the so-called anti-continuum limit of vanishing coupling) analytically. We also provide and explore a simple, yet powerful stability criterion involving the sign of the derivative of the energy vs. frequency dependence of such solutions. We then turn our attention to nonlinear stability, bringing forth the importance of a topological notion, namely the Krein signature. Furthermore, we briefly touch upon linearly and nonlinearly unstable dynamics of such states. Some special aspects/extensions of such structures are only touched upon, including moving breathers and dissipative variations of the model and some possibilities for future work are highlighted.

We report on the excitation of large-amplitude waves, with a probability of around 1% of total peaks, on a photorefractive SBN crystal by using a simple experimental setup at room temperature. We excite the system using a narrow Gaussian beam and observe different dynamical regimes tailored by the value and time rate of an applied voltage. We identify two main dynamical regimes: a caustic one for energy spreading and a speckling one for peak emergence. Our observations are well described by a two-dimensional Schr"odinger model with saturable local nonlinearity.

Foliated Lie systems: Theory and applications (1905.13102v1)

A - foliated Lie system is a first-order system of ordinary differential equations whose particular solutions are contained in the leaves of the foliation and all particular solutions within any leaf can be written as a certain function, a so-called foliated superposition rule, of a family of particular solutions of the system within the same leaf and several parameters. We analyse the properties of such systems and we illustrate our results by studying Lax pairs and a class of -dependent Hamiltonian systems. We finally study foliated Lie systems through Poisson structures and -matrices.
Joint eigenfunctions for the relativistic Calogero-Moser Hamiltonians of hyperbolic type. III. Factorized asymptotics (1905.12918v1)

In the two preceding parts of this series of papers, we introduced and studied a recursion scheme for constructing joint eigenfunctions of the Hamiltonians arising in the integrable -particle systems of hyperbolic relativistic Calogero-Moser type. We focused on the first steps of the scheme in Part I, and on the cases and in Part II. In this paper, we determine the dominant asymptotics of a similarity transformed function for , , and thereby confirm the long standing conjecture that the particles in the hyperbolic relativistic Calogero-Moser system exhibit soliton scattering. This result generalizes a main result in Part II to all particle numbers .

In this letter we give fourth-order autonomous recurrence relations with two invariants, whose degree growth is cubic or exponential. These examples contradict the common belief that maps with sufficiently many invariants can have at most quadratic growth. Cubic growth may reflect the existence of non-elliptic fibrations of invariants, whereas we conjecture that the exponentially growing cases lack the necessary conditions for the applicability of the discrete Liouville theorem.

The article deals with the problem of the integrable discretization of the well-known Drinfeld-Sokolov hierarchies related to the Kac-Moody algebras. A class of discrete exponential systems connected with the Cartan matrices has been suggested earlier in \cite{GHY} which coincide with the corresponding Drinfeld-Sokolov systems in the continuum limit. It was conjectured that the systems in this class are all integrable and the conjecture has been approved by numerous examples. In the present article we study those systems from this class which are related to the algebras . We found the Lax pair for arbitrary , briefly discussed the possibility of using the method of formal diagonalization of Lax operators for describing a series of local conservation laws and illustrated the technique using the example of . Higher symmetries of the system are presented in both characteristic directions. Found recursion operator for . It is interesting to note that this operator is not weakly nonlocal.
Classification of Real Solutions of the Fourth Painleve Equation (1905.12125v1)

Painleve transcendents are usually considered as complex functions of a complex variable, but in applications it is often the real cases that are of interest. Under a reasonable assumption (concerning the behavior of a dynamical system associated with Painleve IV, as discussed in a recent paper), we give a number of results towards a classification of the real solutions of Painleve IV (or, more precisely, symmetric Painleve IV), according to their asymptotic behavior and singularities. We show the existence of globally nonsingular real solutions of symmetric Painleve IV for arbitrary nonzero values of the parameters, with the dimension of the space of such solutions and their asymptotics depending on the signs of the parameters. We show that for a generic choice of the parameters, there exists a unique finite sequence of singularities for which symmetric Painleve IV has a two-parameter family of solutions with this singularity sequence. There also exist solutions with singly infinite and doubly infinite sequences of singularities, and we identify which such sequences are possible (assuming generic asymptotics in the case of a singly infinite sequence). Most (but not all) of the special solutions of Painleve IV correspond to nongeneric values of the parameters, but we mention some results for these solutions as well.
